English has always been my weakest point. It’s not that I recently immigranted to the U.S, but rather it just never flowed in me. I always dreamed of going out of state to schools like UC Berkeley, UChicago, Cornell, etc., but I don’t know if not taking AP English classes will affect my chances

Absolutely, since AP Lang and AP Lit both develop your writing skills. Even if they don’t care that you didn’t take the class, you will still be hurt because you will be a weaker writer than you would otherwise be.

I see, have you taken AP Lang and Lit? Can you give me recommendations on prep books or anything, because I want to take it, but I know my writing skills are lacking.

It would if your school offered these courses and you decided not to take them.

In my opinion, these tests do require skill and confidence going into them, but it also helps to know the tools you can use and how to attack the MC/essays. I believe CliffsAP are the best resources for these tests, aside from reading and writing regularly (which you’d obviously do in school anyway, but I suppose I mean doing it specifically to enhance your abilities in taking the test.)

Just take the classes; good luck!

Certainly not. My school didn’t have any AP English classes; and I was still able to get into an ivy school. If you’re unsure about your writing skills, go and consult with a good English teacher; and have someone competent that you really trust to help you with your essay(s).

Writing is reeaallly important to these ivies…I would recommend taking at least one, especially if your school offers them.
These classes should also be of use in writing your application essays, which are VERY important to getting into these schools.

While the classes themselves aren’t too terribly important, they will build your writing skills, which is essential for Ivies. English is my least favorite subject as well and I managed to trudge through it.

If you are trying to build your writing skills, take AP Lang. AP Literature is more about analyzing litereature and poetry. AP Lang is about writing and how to write well. I think it is a good class, one worth taking, and will give you skills that you will use not just in college, but later in life.
