Will one bad grade keep me out?

I’m a high school junior and I really messed up and missed a bunch an assignments in health class. My teacher doesn’t accept late work and I now have a D+ on my transcript for the semester. My other stats are OK. I’ve taken some honors and AP classes and have gotten As and Bs in them. My overall GPA is 3.3 and I have a healthy mix of meaningful extracurricular activities. I haven’t taken the ACT but am projected to get a 27. My dream is to go to the University of Alabama or Purdue University (exploratory studies). It’s such a ridiculous class to get a bad grade in and I’m absolutely devastated. I feel like my chances are blown and I’ll never get in. Do you think I will need to settle for community college or do I still have a chance?

@tsbna44 will one grade affect this student’s ability to get into Alabama assuming overall GPA is high enough?

Can you remediate that grade this summer by repeating the class?

Is it a semester final grade or a year long class? I ask b/c my son just got into Purdue exploratory studies, freshman year (granted during covid) he got an F (or maybe a D?) his first semester in a core class, brought it up to a C- by the end of the year. It was his only low grade but he still got in. I suspect it would not keep you out at all, but you would need an otherwise strong record so a high GPA if you don’t count the extra (non core) classes, and a good SAT score. They don’t like to see D’s of course, but people get them and still get in, they don’t ignore them, but if your file is otherwise good and your overall GPA is good it will be fine.

My principal told me I am only allowed to repeat it if I failed. Might have been better off if I did

Guess what - it is what it is.

That said, it’s not a core class - make sure you do well in your core classes.

Both will be possibilities nonetheless.

Keep working at it!! Learn from your mistake - sounds like multiple mistakes.

Best of luck.

I think you still have a chance.
