I’ve gotten into the habit of skipping school recently because, tbh, I really don’t like the ppl there or anything about my school in general. I assumed this won’t be a huge problem for college apps b/c my grades are “good” and also detentions reset at the end of this semester.
However, recently I became worried because what if my school somehow sends info that reflects my poor attendance? Or reports other disciplinary problems? Is this even possible and if so how would it impact my application - I believe that despite everything I still want to (and have the stats to) go to a competitive college.
If your school disciplines you for being a truant, then yes it could negatively impact your application. Colleges could also consider a lack of attendance as a sign of commitment issues or irresponsibility, so something to consider.
I would suggest getting out of this habit asap. You really will need to attend classes in college whether you like the class…or not. So get in the habit now.
You also don’t know how this will reflect in your final grades in HS.
If I were you, I’d be checking the policy for number of absences. In every school district near here, if you are absent more than a certain number of days, your grade is either reduced or you fail the course. Yes, there is an appeals procedure, but you have to have a good reason for exceeding absences. You don’t.
If the colleges you are applying to require letters of recommendation from teachers and/or your school counselor, then YES, skipping school and having the attitude of “I don’t like it or the people so I am not going to go” will affect what they write. Remember, colleges are looking for people who WANT to be there.
Short of your school environment being unsafe in any way, I would encourage you to go to school. Your grades may not remain ‘good’ without spending time in class. If there are deeper reasons you aren’t going to school, please talk with a counselor, or clergy member, or other trusted adult.
Does your transcript show days missed by semester or year? If so, a lot of missed classes could be concerning to college AOs. I mean, what if you don’t like a prof in a certain class at college, or your classmates? Some AOs might assume you just wouldn’t go to class then either. You should also be asking yourself those questions.
Our HS district does have varying levels of disciplinary consequences for the number of days of schools missed. At some point, the police go to the student’s home. Make sure you are aware of any of the potential discipline issues and if those go on your transcript.
The other issue is that your counselor and/or teachers may write about how much school you miss. That would be a huge red flag to AOs.
