Will Princeton receive transfer students in 2008 or 2009?

I’m going to attend Amherst this year, which is my second choice next to Princeton. I was dying to go to Princeton but got rejected. My question is, will Princeton receive transfer students in 2008 or 2009?

Gosh…good question. Unfortunately (while I can’t speak for the university), it looks like the answer will be no.

Princeton’s current explanation for not accepting transfers is that so many of the students graduate (97-98% in 6 years) and matriculate that there simply isn’t enough room for transfer students to warrant an admissions process. Princeton hasn’t done transfer admissions for quite some time, and unless they have a complete reversal policy they are unlikely to do so in the near future.

This is pure speculation on my part, so don’t get your hopes down, but realistically I don’t think it will happen.

Sorry, but don’t count on it buddy. I doubt Princeton will change its policy on transfers. You would have to reapply as a freshman if you really wanted to attend Princeton, which I don’t think anybody would be willing to do.

No transfers at Princeton there is no room. But if you go to Smith you can go to Princeton engineering ( see another thread on that) but get a Smith degree!

My suggestion: Please don’t go in to Amherst with mindset that you will be transferring out. Amherst has one of the highest alumni giving rates in the world (a testament to how much the students love it there), and enormous student satisfaction. Please embrace the wonderful opportunity you would have (the vast majority don’t have a chance to go to Amherst, get excited! Buy a sweatshirt!) Amherst is a once in a lifetime opportunity, Princeton will give you another shot when it’s time for graduate school.

That said, think about the things you love about Princeton. Is there a really strong reason why you love Princeton above everywhere else? Can you articulate it? If you truly believe that you will be happy at Princeton and that your personal and educational experience will be so much better than it would be at Amherst (and I doubt this) then your only chance is a gap year. Would you be prepared to take a gap year and reapply on the chance that you may be accepted? It would be a huge risk - I took a gap year (not because I was rejected from any schools, but because I had always wanted to) and it was the best year of my life. Most people would not feel the same way. There is a possibility that you could take a gap year before applying again to Princeton, but it’s quite possible that you would be rejected again. How do you deal? I wouldn’t take a gap year just for a chance at any school, but others would.

Get excited about Amherst - most people there love it, and if you give it a chance, you probably will, too.

Amherst is a great school. After you have been there a little while, I doubt you will still want to transfer.
