Will submitting 2 days late hurt my chances?

I missed the Chicago deadline two days ago, but I recently received an email from Chicago saying that I can still submit. I was going to spend the entire working on my Columbia application, but upon some research, and from what I read I really think I would “fit” better at the University of Chicago.

What do you guys think? Should I just drop my Columbia application and work entirely on my UofC supplements? Or should I just focus on Columbia because Chicago probably wouldn’t give my late application much consideration anyways?

Also, is it way easier to get into Chicago then Columbia? Because Chicago’s acceptance rate is like 4 times that of Columbia’s, but looking at the decision threads here it seems like all of the applicants are of quite high caliber.

I guess it all comes down to which school you like more, you know I had the same issue. I think they are similar, because a lot of people apply to Columbia because its beautiful and Ivy League, but the students have a greater SD in their stats. Both are great in the humanities and the social sciences. And they’re tied according to USNews. At UChicago, students are self-selective, so it has a greater acceptance rate, but its not necessarily easier to get into.

I think I would definitely like UChicago more, but I’m afraid that my chances of being accepted are slim, since my application is two days late (although I did receive an email saying that they would still accept it).

If they sent you an email, then just submit it. It doesn’t take that long, and they are obviously willing to accept it.

Chicago is famous for accepting things a little bit late (2 days is really pushing it, though)

Why didn’t you submit on time?

I had planned to apply to Cornell, Rice, and the University of Chicago, but I severely underestimated the amount of work I had to do for the essays, and ended up only being able to make Cornell deadline as it had the least demanding supplement.

I’m actually in a similar situation as you. Procrastinated much too long, and only got Rice in on time. However, JHU, Northwestern, and Chicago took my apps without any problem as they were only minutes late (I was using Pacific time, dunno if that’s even counted as “late” since I turned them in 9 pm at my place), but my cornell app was 6 hours late…I did it on a whim.

Dunno about cornell’s policy on deadlines XD

But don’t worry. If they emailed you saying its ok to turn it in now, then it should be fine. colleges don’t even start reading the apps until they finish compiling everything, which takes till around mid-January. If you’re still unsure, just email Uchicago back and ask them if your admittance chances will be hurt by a 2 day delay–they’re a pretty nice & laid-back school, from what I’ve heard.

Yeah, but the thing is, Columbia’s application is due today, and my dilemma right now is deciding between Columbia and Chicago.

On the one hand, the more I learn about Chicago, the more I think I’ll love it there, while it’s almost the opposite with Columbia. But on the other hand, if I applied to Chicago instead of Columbia I probably won’t get in due to the late application, so I’m thinking it might be smarter to just focus on my Columbia application.

Haha, spoken like someone who has never set foot in admissions during crazy season.

Admissions will be in a flurry of activity putting together files for at least the next two weeks. You’re fine.

I was in a similar situation. Though I didn’t submit it late. On December 31st, whilst patting myself on the back after submitting all the apps, I came here to CC to just dawdle a bit and then I chanced upon UChicago (because of that Rohan story) and then upon a whim, I visited the site, liked the place quite a lot, learnt of its quirky rep and questions, saw that the deadline was Jan 2 and decided to apply (All this happened in like 2 hours). Then on New Year’s Day, I actually managed to bang out 3 essays! The quality of which is another story altogether, but hey! I was like struggling with every other essay. And just like that I became a UofC applicant.

But … I did get screwed in the end. Didn’t know the International fin aid deadline was also Jan 2 so all of that got sent in like 5 days late. And mind you, they were postmarked 5 days late. So they’ll probably land up at UofC like 2 weeks from today. Ho hum.
