I’m worried that I won’t get in because they will think that I am simply using them as a backdrop school even though I am not.

My writing and reading SAT scores are above their 50% range but my math is in the 50%
680 writing
640 reading
580 math
and 3.6 UW/4.5 W GPA.
I’m hoping to get into Syracuse because I really want to go there!

I wrote very long, detailed, and great essays…so should that aleviate the thought that they are my backdrop school?

Unfortunately, they don’t seem to publish their common data set, which would reveal if they consider “level of interest” in admissions. Schools considering “level of interest” are often those which do not like to be used as safeties.

Nope. Your scores are up there for Syracuse, but they’re not crazy above their averages or anything. The salutatorian of my high school when I was a freshman loved Syracuse and always wanted to go there, but he was a tiny bit concerned about the same thing as you because his scores were all in the 770-790 range, well above Syracuse’s averages. It wasn’t an issue at all though, he got in and is attending happily. Long story short, don’t worry about it.

This is usually only something to worry about when you have extremely high qualifications. For example, if you have stats that look like you have a strong chance at Ivies and other similarly selective schools, you might have something to worry about with schools that engage in yield protection.

Yeah I guess I was worried because I was in the top 25% but you’re right there seems to be a lot of applicants with ivy-acceptable SATs. Thanks for the assurance!
