Thinking of getting a dual degree in teaching: both for general students and special education. Won’t be ready for a job for another few years…will there be any jobs in New York City? (would like to work in Manhatten).

Probably not. The City is going to lay off a lot of teachers. There’s a battle on right now as to how they will be selected. just google nyc teacher lay offs and you’ll find lots of news stories. While some of those who are laid off will undoubtedly find other careers and lose all interest in teaching, there will probably still be lots of experienced teachers trying to get back in the system for an extended perod of time.

No there won’t be. As jonri said, the teachers laid off from the public schools will have first dibs behind the teachers who weren’t laid off but still don’t have a permanent position. There is also a huge corps of substitute teachers and currently three years worth of graduates looking for their first jobs. And don’t forget the Catholic school teachers being laid off this year when many schools will be closed. That was always a good holding place for new teachers waiting for a permanent spot. Find a different career path.

There will never be any jobs for anyone in ManhattEn.
