Will this course schedule be too demanding?

Hi, I’ll be a freshman at Princeton, and I was wondering if this schedule would be considered too intense for someone making the transition into college. That being said, I just signed up for courses that I thought would be interesting.

LAT 101
MAT 104
ART 100
PSY 101

Thanks! My Writing Seminar is in the spring semester, and I was planning on taking a freshman seminar then as well. And if I enjoy my fall semester classes, I may want to continue with some of those subjects in the spring term. Would 5 classes second semester be too rigorous?

Your courseload sounds fine (it’s probably on the less demanding side actually) and most AB students take 5 classes during the spring of freshman year because you have to take a semester of 5 courses in order to fulfill the credit requirement for graduation, so your plan sounds fine.

as boysenberry said, the schedule is not hard, but rather may be on the easier side with 4 100 level classes. Although you say you signed up for the things that you found most interesting, you might want to think about mixing up class size a bit. The 100 classes are all very general survey classes, and other than MAT 104 they are all very large lectures. You might want to look through the course guide again and see if you can find a 200 or 300 level class that is a bit smaller and less survey. I found that I was happiest when I had a mix of lectures and seminars. Or maybe you could switch one of the classes to the spring and take a freshman seminar in the fall? It’s a bit hard going from hs classes that tend to be small to a 100 person lecture.

I wouldn’t take five classes first semester (most advisers won’t let you), but the schedule you listed is really easy. Like ec1234 suggested, I’d recommend you take a freshman seminar in the fall. The courses you listed are either boring (math and Latin) or really big (PSY and ART).

If you haven’t already applied for the freshman seminar, I don’t think that that will be an option for the fall because the deadline for submitting your essays has already passed.

Not all of the freshman seminars fill up and you can often put yourself on a waiting list.

take 5 classes each semester freshman year, the 5th class being a freshman seminar. and, i mean it… i made the mistake of not doing this. a freshman seminar is pretty easy, too… only 1 day a week

also, your schedule will be a joke and probably the easiest semester you have with those classes

art 100 and psy 101 are very easy… oh yea, mat 104 is not too bad either, probably your hardest class. (it’s like calc BC ap)

There will be some freshman seminars that still have room and you can just email the prof and sign up for them without writing an application - look into those when you get on campus (your college dean will probably send out a list of them). Just because they’re not full doesn’t mean they’re not good - and freshman seminars are really a great experience.

Good topic! Has anyone heard anything about SPA 207?

Ya very helpful topic. Sorry to be posting in this thread, but I figured it would be better than starting a new one and starting a chain of “is my course load hard” topics >_<

I think my courses next year will be:

JAP 101
ORF 245
COS 217
MAT 203

How difficult/easy will this course load be? And also, which teachers/preceptors do I want regarding these classes? I’ve got enough credits for advanced standing, so I decided to skip the general physics, chem, and compsci classes. I’m planning on majoring in either ORFE or CS.

SPA 207 is a good course if you want to work on the basics - grammar, vocab etc. There are other 200-level courses that are more focused on literature or cinema or whatever, so if you want a more elective-like course, I’d do one of those instead, but if you want to perfect/sharpen/improve your language skills then 207 is a good place to start.

That sounds like a perfect course for me. I really need to improve my vocab and brush up on my grammar.

opqpop, I think that’s a great schedule. MAT and COS should be fairly challenging while the other two won’t be too tough–a nice balance.

no way, psy 101 and art 100 easy?? psy101 is notoriously difficult and art 100 is also quite challenging and more intense depending upon the preceptor.

Was that a joke?

there is no way that ART 100 is really challenging and demanding. It might be hard to get an A, just due to the number of people in the class, but it doesn’t involve much work.

Yes…the original poster’s class schedule sounds pretty juicy. So long as you stay on top of your work you will be able to tear through it. The 2nd course load posted looks good too, and is more challenging but ultimately more rewarding (in that you learn more, and if all of your classes are super easy it could get boring.)

ART 100 will just require a lot of memorization, but there’s a ton of hand-holding and the essays are a joke.

what about psy 101?

Kind of similar - lots of memorization, and time consuming things but they’re not out to trick you. I think if you are diligent, all intro classes are similar and not hard
