I came from a world in which opportunity and freedom was limited due to ones gender, age, and ethnicity. Growing up in a former Communist country, there were no opportunities for woman to prosper due to anti-feminism. For instance, my mother went to Law School in the Republic of Georgia and was abolished from her chosen career because she is a woman. My mother knew that this was not a place to raise her only child. I was rather young when I came to the United States but I was old enough to understand why it was a better home. The challenges I faced were bearable but rather difficult. It was difficult to make friends because I did not speak English. When I learned English, it was still difficult to communicate with students because of ethnic differences. My school did not have any Georgian students and was separated into multiple groups: the Hispanics, African-Americans, Armenians, and Asians. One can tell that I did not fit in. I developed stronger social skills in order to communicate better with my peers. From that day on, I was capable of making friends with different ethnic groups. As a child I always appreciated how my peers, teachers, and neighbors were a helpful part of my journey to success. When I started to attend high school, I was very good at seeking resources and help from my fellow teachers. With success on my mind, I dedicated most of my time to my studies, which led me to graduate a year early from high school. It is one of my greatest accomplishments because in Georgia, this would never come about. One of my greatest goals in life is to become a physician, this might seem fairly possible to someone who lives in the U.S. but in Georgia it would be my dream, not my goal. In the future, I would like to visit the country of my birth. I miss the beautiful field that I once ran across, the apricot trees that I once picked from and the bright orange roses that I wish grew here. One can tell that I love the country of my birth but it is not the world that I fit in to and it is not the world that I was destined to succeed in.
