Will this go against me?

Hi!

I am applying to engineering schools (NU is my first choice) but i dont want to be a scientist later. Instead i want to do an MBA and work as a manager in some firm (most prob in an engineering firm but maybe not). Do you think it will go against me if i tell them that I dont want to do research but am rather using an engineering undergrad as a route to management school?

People go into engineering for every reason possible…
You’ll probably be doing mechanical engineering etc…either way no one will ask you WHY you picked engineering

the college applications do

I think it should be fine… BUT… you should probably incorporate that with the reasons you are applying to that particular school. Is it the co-op programme? Can you cross-register for business classes? Do you know that something like 1/4 of CEOs are engineers? (Don’t quote me on this; look it up yourself.) You can make a very convincing case why you would be a good engineer and where you plan on being years from now. Just don’t forget that the stepping stone is important and valuable in its own right.

Thanks ariesathena & insecure101 ! :)

My brother is an EE at a large corporation. The typical career path is to start out technical and then move into management. It isn’t easy or common to stay in a technical position and continue to move up. So wanting an MBA following an engineering degree shouldn’t hurt you. Of course, it might help to say that you want some work experience before going on for your MBA…and you probably do. It will make your MBA experience much more meaningful.

Dude! Have you heard of UPenn’s MnT (management and technology) program? It’s a competitive but very good program for engineers who want to mix in the management/business world. Check it out! It’s real cool and gives lots of people an edge.
