I love Wesleyan, but my grades are definitely lower than those of the average accepted student. I put down College of Social Studies as my #1 academic interest on the Wes supplement, which, to my understanding, is quite rigorous and competitive; I’m also under the impression that we can’t apply to CSS until the beginning of sophomore year. Am I right? More importantly, will the fact that I, a relatively weak student, am hoping to take on a very difficult major make the admissions committee less likely to accept me?
Any input would be greatly appreciated!

You apply to CSS in March of your freshman year, but the program does not officially begin until the fall. I think you looking into CSS won’t really hurt you no matter what your grades are like – it’s unique to Wesleyan.

Okay, good to know- thank you very much!

As long as you demonstrated passion in your essays, your choice of major says little about your ability or character. Some people end senior year taking multivariable calculus, and they may get an A+, but they’re not all becoming math majors.
