Will this opportunity be a great aid in getting into UofM?

Hi everybody,

I’m currently a Sophomore with a pretty consistent unweighted GPA of 3.8~3.9 (cause of some B’s from honor/ap classes). I’ve grown up being a Michigan boy and this is my dream school for sure!

I got this really nice opportunity to work as a “intern” or you could say “lab technician” at a lab in the University of Michigan (min wage, 5days a week over the summer) where I just do various basic tasks in the lab. Will this job help me greatly in getting accepted at the UofM :)? I was also thinking of maybe volunteering on the weekends if possible at the hospital

It would probably be seen the same as other ecs, but you’ll almost certainly get in if you score 30+ on the ACT.

Not really, it’s just another EC. To be honest an intern whose job is essentially that of a low level secretary or a lab assistant will not be seen as an incredibly amazing EC, even if it is at Michigan. Volunteering at the hospital will also not be anything special as there are so many local kids who do that. You still need to have the 3.8+ GPA and 30+ ACT to get in.

You should do things like volunteering at the hospital because you want to do them. Not because they beef up your resume.

^ I agree. On that note, resume-wise, it definitely can’t HURT. It’ll probably spark their interest a little but they’re looking at a variety of things, so it’s not like it would get you in automatically. I’d say if you keep those stats at a consistent (or minimal drop, depending on your J/S year workload), you’ll probably have a good chance either way.
But again, if you want to do this intern thing, you should anyway! (Before junior year takes its toll and you can’t do any extra-curriculars haha.)
Good luck!
