I’m a freshman admit and I’ve just found a very stupid mistake in my application.
In 10th grade, I have received a “Pass” in a Pass/Fail course in high school. However, the UC application did not let me enter the grade “Pass” and only let me enter a grade between A B C D F and so I marked my “Pass” as an A.
I didn’t realize that a “Pass” and “A” can be completely different things until now. Would this get my admission cancelled? I can’t call the admissions office now (since its the weekend) and I am freaking out. Please give me your views on this matter.
P.S. I found that my UC GPA actually goes up without the A from the Pass/Fail course. Since an “A” in a regular course is 4 points but my GPA exceeds 4.0, my overall GPA was actually lowered. I guess this is a good thing? (since I practically lowered my GPA with my mistake)
Call the admissions office on Monday, I’m sure it would be fine. I’m not sure though why you would have thought “Pass” = “A”, usually means you earned a C or above equivalent work. It would have been more appropriate to have asked admissions or your counselor at the time how you should enter this course, if at all.
@CU123: UC’s do not require transcripts until an applicant enrolls so they go by the self-reported grades only for admission purposes until the final HS transcript is sent.
@Gumbymom Thank you for your reply. I am an international applicant going to high school outside the US. I think the a-g requirements don’t apply strictly to high schools from outside US, but even without the Pass/Fail course I entered, I still meet the a-g UC course requirement. Does this mean I’m safe from any worries?
Also, I’ve already graduated high school in my home country so I’ve sent my official final transcripts to the admissions office. Since my CalCentral task “Submit your transcript” is marked as completed, does that mean my transcript and self-reported coursework have been checked already?
You still need to contact admissions regarding the mistake since they will compare your final transcript to your self-reported grades and any discrepancies could result in your acceptance being rescinded. Make sure you keep any documentation you receive from admissions and that they are aware of the mistake.
I have a different take on this, a mistake is a mistake, my opinion is they won’t care, if they happen to notice it, then you can tell them it was a mistake, and again they probably won’t care, or you can make a mountain out of a mole hill.
@CU123 That is true, but the SIR deadline is coming up soon and I do not want to get my acceptance cancelled in July (just in case the small chance happens). I’ll call them anonymously to see what their general policies are regarding these kind of mistakes.
UC’s tend to be very strict and if there are any discrepancies between self-reported courses/grades on the UC application vs. what is shown in the actual final transcript, there could be repercussions. I have seen students rescinded for grade discrepancies. UC’s require that they are notified about such mistakes so my attitude is that it is better to be safe than sorry.
I would definitely call them and be straight upfront that you were rechecking your record and saw the discrepancy and realized your mistake. Given you are an international student and may not be well versed in pass/no pass terminology can help you. But being proactive and bringing to their attention is far better than them calling you on it.
@Gumbymom@NYDreammom@CU123@AboutTheSame Thank you for your replies! I’ve called admissions and they’ve told me to just fill out the admissions update form that notes this mistake, and that this shouldn’t matter too much
