Will you buy an electric or hybrid car next?

Haven’t tried it with other navigational apps. The BMW navigational system has always been pretty decent, comparable to Google Maps, but I will play around with it.

I have yet to find a vehicle where Waze turn-by-turn integrates into a HUD on CarPlay. Would be interested to know if there are some that do. I have seen HUDs that integrate whatever the default mapping program is for the platform – so Google Maps for Android Auto and Apples Maps for CarPlay. Awesome of some are already doing this.

I love my heads up, but it doesn’t work with other map apps which I had grown used to using. Other minor issue is it doesn’t work with polarized glasses.

I’m not a big fan of Apple Maps so I havent’ tried it but will give it a shot. (Maybe it’s gotten better since I last tried it.

My son’s 2017 Mazda 6 has the heads up display that integrates with the factory installed apple car play - it’s wonderful and I want it for my next car too!

But does the HUD integrate with Waze specifically?

Recall means more than OTA updates. It requires the manufacturer to fix the issue at no cost to teh owner. Moreover, that fix means hardware and software. For example, if the software fix requires more memory or a faster computer than what is currently in the EV, the manufacture has to install the new HW at not cost as well.

Regardless, the label ‘recall’ ain’t going anywhere as it has legal ramifications.

@citivas What do you mean by “integrate” with Waze? My car has ApplePlay and I am able to access/use Waze on my HUD. I have a 2023 Toyota. Additionally, we have rented a lot of different cars from Enterprise (all have had ApplePlay) and never had an issue having the HUD display Waze.

Interesting. I have rented at least a dozen cars with CarPlay and about half of them have had a HUD and none displayed Waze on it. Including a Toyota (don’t recall what model year it was). That’s great. Which model Toyota do you have that does the turn by turn Waze in the HUD? Want to keep it in mind for future rentals. Thanks. From Googling it seems like the BMW may do it too.

Ok, so for my 2025 BMW, using an IPhone, the HUD works for Apple Maps but not Google Maps. I have not installed Waze on this phone. The BMW navigation HUD is much better than Apple Maps. It doesn’t just give text and a directional arrow but it projects the entire map as you approach a turn.

I primary use nav apps to avoid traffic and chose among alternate routes, and haven’t really experienced an included sat/nav system that does this nearly as well as Waze or Google Maps. I wish that manufacturers would integrate both. It would be especially useful with EVs where crowdsourced apps can ad value re: finding charging stations.

Google Maps and I assume Waze display on your navigation screen, just not the HUD. I had read that if you use an Android phone, Google Maps and Waze will display on the HUD but I haven’t personally tested that.

Yes. I was hoping for the best of both worlds, which doesn’t currently exist at least not for iPhone.

Someone flagged this post. I have no idea why!

So a couple thousand posts late. Lol. I recently got a Polestar 2 EV. It is a Google centric car but has Apple car play also etc. I use Google maps but you can use Waze also. It’s the little cousin of a Volvo sedan. I couldn’t be happier with this car. I drive like 72 miles like 3 days a week. I have a garage with a level one charger (the car comes with both level 1 and 2 cords),in my garage. I was going to put a level 2 in but I get back up to 80-90% pretty easily. So still deciding on that. Plus we have several Free level 2 chargers by me and use them occasionally when I go for a long multimile walk. (yes, we have level 3 by us and Tesla super chargers which the car can now use with an adapter).

So the Polestar has some physical buttons and it feels like you’re driving a car not a computer. Polestar was the racing division of Volvo. Anyone that has driven a Volvo will feel at home in it since it’s very similar.

Because its political?? Maybe??

Jealous!

Any hybrids models that would have a drive approx like an Audi A6?

We are considering replacement of my husband’s 2013 A6 (only 110K miles, but to run optimally it will need new turbocharger… at least $3k). This is our road trip car, and while we are still doing cross country treks through remote-ish areas, all electric is a no go, but we would consider hybrid. Today we drove an Audi Q5e hybrid SUV because I thought we might age better with higher seats, but we didn’t love it. Drove a new A6 (no plug-in hybrid option), and it had a good and familiar feel to it. We do like the fact that newer cars have more safety features. And the top camera is cool feature.

Think plug-in hybrid.

BMW has a plug in hybrid sedan. One of my neighbors has one. It’s a 5 series. He has the M trim package but it’s not a M5. Drives beautifully.

I like the look of the A6 better but the BMW is comparable as far as ride. IMO

Interesting that you didn’t like the Q5, my bil had one and I really liked it compared to my Subaru Outback. But then changing from one SUV to another is different than a sedan to a SUV.

We’ve had minivans since baby #1, and I still drive the 2006 Odyssey. (It is mostly for around town, though he did drive it when we went skiing with our daughter last week). I like sitting up high. But this will be mostly hubby’s car, and driving the Q5e and A6 back-to-back did reinforce his idea that he’s a sedan guy…. especially for road trips. I do have to agree that it was a nicer ride, supposedly a longer wheel base than Q5e (based on A4 chasis).

The plug-in hybrid idea has appeal this month, significant rebates both federal (for imports only if you lease, which we typically don’t do) and state. And of course there is small risk of upcoming tariffs.
