Will you buy an electric or hybrid car next?

There are a few different “trapped in a Tesla” stories.

There was also this story:

It was the Angela Chao case I was thinking of. (I had to look up her name, I remembered she was politically connected but not how)

If you’re asking about her political connection, it’s Mitch McConnell, her brother-in-law.

Must say that this is a Tesla design defect. The shifter in my Tesla S was based on swiping the screen, not pulling a lever or pushing a button. There were several times when my finger swipe did not register and the car went forward or backward, opposite of my intention (and I was not impaired).

The shifter in our X is a steering wheel based handle thingy. When starting from a complete restart, one needs to yank that handle twice to the desired position (forward or back, doesn’t matter) to shift into that position. I was annoyed at that (twice, why not one pull?) but maybe it was designed as a safety feature?

We sold our 2019 M3, but if my memory is correct, didn’t the first pull put it into neutral?

I now have a 2024 M3 with the finger swipe, and it’s never gotten it wrong.

However, there is an option to let the car automatically choose which way it should go, based upon the sensors, and I don’t remember if it was on by default or not, but I disabled it. I thought that was simply a disaster waiting to happen when, not if, it chose the wrong direction.

I’ll have to double check that, but I don’t think so. 2017 X. I think it stayed in parked.

Or does pulling it lightly put it in neutral versus pulling it hard put it in drive or reverse?

However, odd selectors are not unique to EVs.

All I know is that while musk was jumping around on stages and talking about robotaxis, Waymos quietly took over SF. I saw one in San Mateo the other day, so they’re expanding down the peninsula. Interested to see when they let them cross the bridges!

Waymo’s are everywhere in my neighborhood/area.

Waymo service areas are shown at Service areas - Waymo One Help .

Seems like if people can use Waymo and other rideshare or taxi services more, they may be less likely to want to buy their own (any kind of) car (or an additional one for their household).
