Will You Go to the Cinema This Year?

I’ve decided not to visit any cinema house for at least another month. It’s just too risky. Some people still are not giving the COVID-19 disease its proper respect and thus, could possibly contract the disease and invariably infect someone else. Bye the way, what are your house of worship’s plans? Reduced seating? Multiple Schedules with limits on admission?

Probably not but I don’t think I went last year either.

Even if movie theaters are permitted to open, what films will they show? This really has Hollywood scrambling. Release schedules are worked out very carefully but are now upended. Major releases have been pushed way back or made available on streaming platforms.

I’m no expert but it seems to me that it would be expensive to make films available on a state by state basis. Art houses will probably have an easier time of it. I may go to our local, independently owned theater once they have safety procedures in place since attendance is usually quite low. I doubt I’ll visit the cineplex this year.

I love movies (and movie popcorn!) but I doubt I go to see any this year. Too much worry about the virus and too little interest in the movie trailers I’ve seen.

As for houses of worship - I’m on the Session of my Presbyterian Church. We’ve already cancelled all in-person worship services, activities, and meetings until June 1 (at the earliest). We just have too many at-risk members to take the chance. Given how sociable and how “huggy” some of those members are, it would be hard to enforce consistent social distancing.

We’re making do with online service and Zoom Bible studies, but it’s hard.

Nope, but tbs, we go to the movies maybe twice a year - because my H is very picky.

We have a broadway series theatre subscription, but in March all shows cancelled or postponed until late summer. I doubt it will be opening anytime soon. It’s in one of those huge old theatre’s that seat about 2500.

Since I’m in NYS nothing will be opening for quite a while, so no decisions need to be made at this time anyway.

If I lived in a State which is opening up, no, I wouldn’t be going to anything that opens.

We have not been to a movie theater in a couple of years. Mr. is not a fan of watching a movie with a bunch of folks eating, chewing, slurping, and spilling drinks around him. He grabbed the biggest Sony Bravia TV he could find at Costco… we pay Amazon et al to rent our entertainment. We have a rule - no eating while watching a movie or a show on TV. Only a glass of wine or a cup of tea… I have been wanting to go to an upscale place that serves adult beverages and has seats spread out… but maybe not this year.

The last time we went to the movies was last July, and I can’t remember when we went before then. I can’t imagine going to the movies anytime soon.

We do have tickets for Hamilton at the Kennedy Center in 2 months. I can’t imagine that will be taking place either, especially considering that DC isn’t expected to hit peak for quite awhile, nor would I want to be in a packed theater surrounded by people.

Once school is back in session and folks are back at work and all the shops are open so that people have other places to go, we might. But then our favorite is the 11AM on a weekday screening. (One of the perks of being retired). Last movie we saw was Knives Out, and there were maybe six other people in the theater. I try not to touch the armrests with my hands already, and never eat or drink anything while there (too frugal).

Not sure.

Pre-closure, I would go out for a movie & a drink about every other Tuesday with a friend of mine.

I sorely miss getting together with her.

No.

Nope, but it’s not hard for me. Only go about 2-3 times a year anyway.

@shellfell - we also have Hamilton tickets at KC, but not until Aug. 1. Even then I’m not sure how things will be or if it will be canceled or postponed. We had a group of eight going, so hoping that it will not be an issue to get a refund if it turns out to be postponed to an alternate date that doesn’t work for all or some of us.

this year - probably. Anytime soon? No. H is a huge movie buff. He worked at the theater from age 14-23 and was a projectionist for a long time. We see a lot of movies and if I don’t go, he will happily go alone. We don’t buy anything from concessions btw. But even he is like “uhh… that doesn’t seem smart.”

And he is the anti-germaphobe. He has gotten coughed on, sneezed on, barfed/other body fluided on by 500 little kids every day for almost 30 years. He doesn’t even notice anymore when visibly snotty kids run up and give him a hug in the store - and I’m backing away going eeuuuwww!!!

Church? That’s easy. We don’t go. That’s the best time to go to grocery shopping around here.

I’ll definitely go back and am looking forward to our neighborhood theater opening up again. About a year and a half ago I bought the AMC package that gives you 3 movies a week. I prefer to go either early afternoon on weekdays or Sunday morning and there are rarely many other folks at those showings. On several occasions I’ve been completely alone in the theater and many more times there is just 1-2 other people.

I’m immune deficient and I avoid crowds during cold and flu season even in a regular year. I’m not going to the movies or anywhere else with crowds until this is under control.

If I didn’t worry about illness I would get one of those passes that lets you go to the movies each week for some cheap monthly price. I love going to the movies.

Several years ago our favorite theater reconfigured to more spread out captain chairs that you can preselect seat assignments. I would imagine that cinemas with this configuration can sell every other seats so theater goers will not have someone next to them and require everyone to wear a mask.

If this is the seating arrangement, i see very little risk to the customer and would likely see a movie in the theater.

We usually frequent the movies especially during winter - weather and Oscar nominations related. Much less so other times. We have a home theater so pretty comfy set-up and my husband’s popcorn is better than the theaters.

We do have a drive-in theater a couple towns over. It’s an annual tradition to pack a picnic dinner and go since the kids were tiny, something my husband and I still do often when our kids are home visiting in the summer but even by ourselves. I bet they would do a good business if they could open but they are closed - COVID-19 concerns and not essential. Normally they would be open on weekends now.

For me, it’s still the same as it is for me on the restaurant thread - even if they take distancing precautions, there is still the bathroom question to think about.

I haven’t been to a movie theater since July, 2012, when the Aurora, CO tragedy occurred. The only thing that could get me to go would be a request from a grandchild - and it would have to be a matinee.

I will go back to church at some point, but have started watching the live broadcast from our church every Sunday. It’s fine for now.

We rarely went to movie theaters pre-covid 19 (maybe up to 2-3x/yr), so don’t plan on increasing that.

Missed two performances of local community theater as both were canceled due to covid-19 SIP orders. That’s 2/3’s if the season (we buy season tickets).

Missed a covid canceled opera performance—that’s 1/3 of the season (we are season subscribers of this too—last year they also canceled 1 of the 3 offerings).

The performing arts are definitely hurting.

Haven’t been a church attendee for decades so am not missing that but I know many are and don’t find the video streaming to be a satisfying replacement.
