W&M-no brainer.

W&M B school is not particulary well known outside Virginia nor is it well knowfor Econ only UW which is Top 10. UW, Illinois, and Indiana all have better programs that are fairly equal.

For Business:

For Econ:

Def. go IU (Kelley)

Hopefully you got money, because many direct admits there do. It WILL be the best in the long run, because salaries will be highest for a business major with a degree from there behind them. If you are a direct admit, please post or PM me your stats, because I am considering going to IU Kelley, too, and I think my stats would qualify me for a direct admission/ top scholarship available/ honors program, but I am not sure. Good luck to you, though!

youu must be very decent to get into all very good 4 schools! congratulation. Mind if i kno your stat? I want to have a shot at those school as well.
I would say UIUC, kelly or Wisc. They’re all even. W&M is very hard to get in as well but i don’t think it’s better than the other three

Where are you in-state?

If none of them are in-state, it would be between William & Mary and Wisconsin-Madison for me, because they have decent business programs but very good overall reputations, as well, in case you decide to switch your major later (it happens). I’m biased because I live on the East Coast, so W&M would keep me close to my family, but if that doesn’t matter to you…it doesn’t matter.

Indiana Kelley

IU - Kelly

Did you visit all four? Are all four affordable or at least financially doable?

Which one do you just like best, considering all factors, not just which one is slightly better for this major or that major? Go there.

Wisconsin has produced over twice as many Fortune 500 CEOs as Kelley. And Illinois. It also has a huge new SOB complex.

Personally I would have to go with Madison because it is strong in both your areas (you have yet to decide) and if you switch to another major altogether it is tops nationally in MANY areas. It is right up there with Berkeley, Michigan and Virginia in terms of top publics and research. Madison is also a GREAT town, the campus is beautiful (on the lake) and you get all the Big Ten experience if you are into sports.

hey guys, thanks for your advice! i’m actually international. from singapore, I graduated from high school 2 years ago and just about to finish off my two year mandatory national service liability. i’m actually leaning more for w&m due to the small environment but kelley and madison seem quite tempting as well. what are the pros and cons of w&m compared to madison and kelley?

I think this is where “fit” really comes in. Three of these are large university settings and one (W&M) is smaller with a LAC feel. My high school senior is strongly considering Madison (in fact, I think that is going to be where he ends up), but we live in VA. I went to W&M and loved it - DS didn’t even really consider it and did not apply. His younger brother is likely to choose W&M as his #1 choice, but would never consider someplace the size of UW.

What type of interests do you have outside of class? Are you looking for a larger or smaller setting? If you want a large university, I’d choose Madison or IU. For smaller, go W&M. Really, though, these are all excellent schools and you are fortunate to have such nice choices - none would be “wrong.” Tell us a bit more about you so folks can help more.

thanks for the words of wisdom travelfun

i think after a 2 year hiatus from the academics, due to my involvement in mandatory national service, i’m looking forward to an intellectual stimulating environment and academic challenging. ultimately, i’d want to work outside the united states so hopefully the college would provide some recognition. i’ve done some research on the 4 colleges and i feel w&m is a good fit but i generally find that the job prospects are better at madison and kelley compared to w&m. i generally enjoy the intimate setting but i reckon i would appreciate the atmosphere such as the likes of madison. what’s the setting like in virginia compared to the life in the midwest?

oh for those who asked about my stats, i’ve been a bit fortunate to get into the four schools, i got 1300 (old SATS) and 3.5 gpa.

thanks once again all for the advice!

I visited UW and U of I this week so I can help you on campus life/setting if you like all the schools equally in terms of academics.

U of Wisconsin- Madison is a very engaging city, lively campus. Architecture isnt amazing but decent. Students seem like they really love the city. the Unviersity is located right by a lake, which makes the campus even more beautiful. If you want a city type college with tons of school pride, go to Wisc.

U of Illinois- Urbana-Champaign is very different from Madison. Much more midwestern, surrounded by plains and cornfields. The Campus is huge though! All the buildings seem very nice and are a little bit more appealing than Wisconsin. The facilities are top notch too, including the fitness center.

Both colleges are in the Midwest so the student body will most likely be very nice. Madison seems to be more of a party school, but Madison is wonderful.

Based on these two points, I really think Madison gives you the best of all you are looking for. Also, don’t underestimate that you can make a “big” school a “small” school depending upon the company you keep. Madison a intellectually challenging and you can find smaller cliques of folks who crave that.

I think the OP’s inclination toward W&M is telling, The others are huge schools with a lot of emphasis on sports (and drinking) that may seem trivial to someone who is older, and foreign-born.
