Williams College [$1.8k parent contribution] vs Georgia Tech [$6.9k] CS (two days to decide)

Late to this thread. OP - for what it’s worth I would go with GT for all the reasons @DadOfJerseyGirl summarized so well in their posts. Good luck!

yeah true : (. In their reconfirm interest email sent to me the week before I got in, they said they’d release decisions sometime after the 15th.

ngl tho I could have taken the time to visit Williams whether or not I would have gotten in beforehand though.

This is a misleading dichotomy. I am a professor at a SLAC and plenty of our students become software engineers - they are heavily recruited.

Have you looked at the course lists to see if the offerings in your major are interesting ?

Williams (make sure to click on each of the semesters. Also, additional/different courses may be offered in different years)

You can of course check other majors as well!

Which since you won’t have any debt, wouldn’t be an issue!!!

It would help if everyone on CC stopped talking a single year of college costs and only used four years of expenses.

welp, committed to Williams College! Financial aid (basically full-aid) is sooo hard to pass, and honestly, I’m open to new experiences, as uncertain as they may be!

Congrats. Don’t look back. For the CS degree the effort you put in , your side projects and leet code will have a far bigger impact than the school choice. I am sure with the attention you get at a LAC, you will thrive and do well.

I also wanted to chime in that plenty of kids spend their junior year abroad at Williams. Oxford is in the cards!

Remember, it is always defensible to follow the money over comfort, especially as your family was worried about the strain Georgia tech would have meant. That’s important if there’s this one snowy foggy icy day when you’re pining for the balmy sunny south. Edited to say when, it will come!

Also important: GET OUTSIDE! Yes I’m shouting. Catch as much sun if you can, no mater how cold it is, but even when it’s overcast, get out in the early afternoon because the light outside is still better than inside, and will help stabilise your mood, as will exercise. Northern winters affect most people, and you’re not used to them. If you’re dark skinned, you might also consider taking vitamin D supplements.

You might want to reach out to all the support groups available for low income and URM kids, to help you feel more comfortable right away. Land send has good sales for winter coats.

Welcome to New England. Enjoy the outdoors and scenery. It’s absolutely gorgeous at Williams when the leaves change in the fall, and when there is a fresh coat of snow…and when things bloom in the spring. It’s not all doom and gloom!

Bring a fleece and hoodie with you for when the evening gems and morning temps are chilly. See what others are wearing for winter jackets…then just mail order. You need to find out how to access that $500 first year bonus, if you need to use it for this.

Congratulations!

I grew up with it, but I actually love the winter. The magical mornings when the world has been transformed, all the fun with snow, and so on.

Congratulations OP, you made a great choice!

You might know of these resources already, but they are quite helpful:

Bell Book: https://campus-life.williams.edu/bell-book/

Class of 2028 page of resources (expand the topics on the right side of the page): https://first-year.williams.edu/

AFAIK, the free store is still operating: ‘For students, by students’: Free Store serves student needs through item exchange – The Williams Record

Good luck to you!
