Williams College [$1.8k parent contribution] vs Georgia Tech [$6.9k] CS (two days to decide)

Have been reading in the background….congratulations, OP, so excited for you and all the amazing new experiences you will have…soak it all up, every bit. Take advantage of all the mentoring opportunities that a small, top-notch LAC offers. If some of it is uncomfortable, know that, in the end, it will put you in a place where you can go almost anywhere…back to Georgia, (and appreciate it with fresh eyes), to California, NYC, overseas, the sky’s the limit. I hope you’ll come back to tell the story! Your family must be so proud!

Personally, I think part of college is meeting new people, from new places and expanding academic horizons. For that reason (and it’s cheaper) I think Williams is great. Living in rural MA is an entirely different world than GA…

I wouldn’t worry about AP credits at all, honestly (placement sure).

EDIT! sorry I missed you made a decision somehow:) oops. Congrats!

Congratulations OP! Be sure to explore and take advantage of all Williams offers–which is a lot! You’ll learn a ton and be ready for wherever you want to go…

Yes, I understood that when I posted; however, that is not how fly-in programs work. To the best of my knowledge, fly-in programs occur prior to an applicant applying such as the program at Dartmouth College for Native American students.

Congrats on Williams! You made a courageous decision (and the correct one ). It is an amazing place where you won’t be just a number–I’m quite confident Williams will look out for you and provide the support you need to succeed! I hope you love your time there as much as my friends and I did. And do take advantage of their unique tutorial program and their fully funded travel abroad programs!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

It is considered one of “the Little Ivies” for a reason!!!

Now my recommendations for you are:

  • Have an amazing summer
  • See what Williams has to offer
  • When you get there, immerse yourself into the social and intellectual life.

My kid graduated from a different NESCAC, and there are experiences at these small rural colleges that are unlike any other. Late night walks to see the stars (which, if you are a DC native, you may rarely have had the ability to see), hiking, leaf-peeping, etc. My kid spent many an hour laying outdoors in the Middlebury Knoll looking at the stars and having serious intellectual discussions as well as silly ones.

Summer internships at other universities - WIlliams has a great reputation in CS programs in the top universities for CS, and there are many many WIlliams CS graduates working in top companies. There are no alumni networks as tight as those from LACs.

As for future jobs. The graduates of this programs seem to be doing pretty well for themselves.

In short - you are going to have a great 4 years, and dude, you also have a bright future!
