Williams College Early Decision for Fall 2024 Admission

I think that S24s music was much more of a hook than we thought. I did not think he was going to be admitted. Much luck and sympathies to those who didnt get what they want! Thinking of you and know you will be successful

Great to see this, that after a gap year, was accepted when reapplying, just goes to show that there are many routes to follow. Congrats.

Thank you Tennis Parent for being a wonderful guiding light throughout this process.

Congrats to all accepted students. I am really sorry about those who were deferred or rejected and wish them good luck in the RD round; I heard that Williams was extra competitive this year (I heard about a 4% acceptance rate on Reddit, which is crazy. Can someone verify this?). I am sure you are all brilliant, and it’s their loss.

I find it implausible their ED acceptance rate dropped to 4%. Like, I think for that to be true they would have to have decided to end competitive varsity sports.

But they usually do a press release, so we should know soon.

I think as per your theory in previous posts, all of the people who were accepted that posted here were hooked in some way, two athletes and my son is a high level musician.

So I just went on Reddit, and a few students posted that the rejection letter said that Williams accepted 1 in 25 of the applicants in the ED pool. That appears to be where the 4% came from, but who knows? Certainly doesn’t make sense with the athlete contingency unless those kids were not included in the calculations. But even still, that seems low.

Yes, I wonder if they are misinterpreting that letter in some way, like leaving out a critical qualification.

That said, I think it is at least possible the non-recruited-athlete accepted-not-deferred rate is that low. Last year overall it was 255 out of 943, with 144 deferred. So, take out all the recruited athletes, maybe bump up the total applications, maybe defer some more–conceivably it could get there.

Yes, that’s why I couldn’t believe it and asked for confirmation. It is not just that their ED rate is lower than last year’s ED, but it is lower than last year’s RD, too, which was around 9%. Either they SIGNIFICANTLY changed their admissions scheme, like to the point of ending recruitment as you said, or Reddit is just wrong.

Or they could have done what Cornell announced (without announcing it) - purposefully reduce the number of ED admits (apart from recruited athletes). Maybe this is an attempt to hammer home the idea that ED isn’t an advantage at Williams (which is what they have been saying, but I know that is often questioned).

Which one would think would lead to many deferrals (which we are not seeing?)- they are not going to outright reject great candidates. Maybe @lilyesh could share the actual text?

Tulane too. This is the most likely explanation.

If true, it means that RD acceptance rates will be considerably higher.

But also a ***** show? All these extra kids will shot gun top schools.

Does anyone in Reddit say they were deferred?

And would spell the end of ED. Why bother committing yourself?

So - part of Cornell’s rational is that ED skews higher SES, if schools are indeed cutting back on EDs, is it a reaction to the SCOTUS ruling? For financial reasons, schools only match a certain number of QB, for example, and the rest get rolled into RD while still using the QB app.

Yeah, you can get a lower straight unhooked admit rate in ED, but similar final admit rate, with enough deferrals. But of course there need to be enough deferrals!

Generally If Williams was starting to explain to people what their ED stats looked like outside of recruited athletes, that would be great. I wish every college would do that. I get they may not be as open about some other possible hooks, but recruited athletes and Questbridge are “open” policies.

Speaking of which, maybe that 1 in 25 also does not include Questbridge.
