Our DS is torn between these choices. He’ll likely be pre-med with perhaps history major, but could decide on law as well. We are from California/Bay Area; he got into Berkeley also, but not considering that because of large class sizes. Has visited both places and likes them both. It’s going to be same cost for us. Looking for supportive learning atmosphere (not competitive or cut throat) where he can thrive academically. I know the two places are very different in their setting, but he’s good with both. Thoughts? How is Brown for premed for someone not in the joint MD program?
I’ve met and known alum from both colleges and IMO there’s no beating a small, intellectual college. I was frankly surprised by how few lasting friendships the Brown alum (both men) actually made during their time there.
True - both are great schools but Brown is much, much larger. I was there in the 90s and agree with @circuitrider that you might not feel the same kind of connection as you might see with a more tight-knit school like Williams. And Williams will have very small classes from the beginning, which is nice. Brown classes can have 100-200 students (especially the intro classes). I felt like it was hard to get to know any professors until my junior year. But, it might vary by major.
Thanks for your input!
I personally would not worry about Brown being good for pre-med, or history or pre-law for that matter.
But I do kinda feel like you were more describing an LAC academic environment than a university environment. So unless Brown’s location in Providence was a big draw–and it is for some–I am not sure why he would not just choose Williams with those sorts of preferences. It seems pretty perfect.
