Well of course, they don’t need to hold tennis balls in their shorts or underwear, at all. The ballboy or ballgirl will produce a ball instantly for a second serve. It’s simply a habit that players get into over years of practice and matches without ballboys, and they feel more comfortable with the ball there.

It’s dumb for Murray to give away points for that. Like I tell my kids if they lose points for a late assignment - what a waste. Lendl should get him to work on playing matches without keeping a ball in his pocket.

emilybee I think you’re too hard on regular people. It was declasse for Novak’s parents to wear those tshirts, but it was also endearing. How would they know their son would ever see another grand slam final. They don’t do it anymore. And bravo Mirka as well.

For my taste the US cameras linger far too long on the families. Here we are telling the players to stop fixating on their box, and the camera focuses for an embarrassingly long time on Judy Murray, or Andy’s girlfriend, or the Duchess of Cambridge. Just show them for a couple of seconds and move on, not 10 seconds right in a spectator’s face while a player is up at the line getting ready to serve.

Well I have to ask. I’ve been to many professional and amateur tennis matches, certainly cheered for my favorites, and never in my life had a player tell me to f*** off. Yet you or your friends have experienced this more than once. What exactly is your style of rooting for a player? I’m not trying to hassle you I’m honestly curious.

I dislike Andy Murray with a passion. That pose he did after winning matches, looking at the sky with a constipated face and making “number one” with his fingers made me want to kill him.

Shut up, you’re number 4 and you’re not going to win a major anytime soon.

Pure design failure. The pockets in the Adidas shorts go down about 40%. The pockets in the Nike shorts go down about 70%. After seeing the closeups, it’s not surprising that he had a few wardrobe malfunctions.

The compression shorts were added after photographers got really good with high-resolution cameras.

It’s not hard to make proper shorts. Most companies have been doing so since the 1960s.

I usually go up a size in shorts when I’m playing tennis as it’s nice to have a little extra room instead of the ball bulge.

I’ve never played with ballboys (other than kids that were around that volunteered
to do so). But I have a certain rhythm and turning around to request another ball
would make for a different routine.

Adidas probably pays him a good chunk of change to wear their stuff. It the ball
falls out for Murray, it probably does the same for their customers which would be
a bad thing.

Update: just checked a picture of Djokovic’s ST shorts - they have the same shallow pocket as the Adidas shorts.
Nadal’s Nike Shorts have the ball pockets going about halfway down but they are longer than the other players (he used to wear capris so it’s not surprising that he wears longer than usual shorts).

As I said, we were doing the Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi Oi Oi cheer (which is a very common thing when an Aussie is playing.) Mac was losing and already had one tantrum. But it wasn’t as if he had no one rooting for him as we were in Delray Beach and it was a very pro Mac crowd.

Since i have been to many matches with my friends I am going to assume they were doing what they have done when we’ve been at matches together - vamos if it was a Spanish player, allez if it was a french player, etc, etc., etc.

Lot of players aren’t the nicest human beings. I once heard Arnaud Clement call a ball kid an idiot because the kid didn’t throw him the ball the way he liked it thrown to him.He got booed by the crowd and rightly so.

Such a sweet, beautiful moment for Roger. His girls coming out at the end was too adorable beyond words. Felt bad for Andy but it’s because the entire British media puts too much pressure on him. His time will come.
