Window coverings in a rental

I help a family member with their rental home, it is 30+ years old and the assorted blinds are aging, strings are breaking. What level of window coverings do you usually see in a rental? Does she need to cover all the windows or only the ones which would be required for privacy?

She would like to sell, when the market goes back up (!) so is theoretically looking at the short term, though it’s been 7 years of a down market, so who knows how that will go!

We usually just have venetian blinds, and on most of the windows. If you want to get a bit more decorative and expect that the place will remain a rental (rather than an owner occupied), you could add some valances. They should be neutral enough to appeal to either gender.

I put Walmart blinds in my rentals. These are working class rentals. They are cheap, and easy to replace (easier than cleaning). I do hang curtains I keep in between renters. I think it makes the place show better. I offer to leave them up or they can use their own.

Our kids’ college rental was a remodel so it didn’t have window coverings. I went to Home Depot and chose blinds and installed them myself. I couldn’t believe the amount of labor required so I bought a drill which made it a lot easier. We sold the blinds to the next tenant.

So you might not have to put anything on the windows.

I’ve had rentals for years and have always provided blinds or shades. I prefer the miniblinds that you can pick up at Home Depot. They’re inexpensive but they do the trick.
