Windows 10

Is there any reason I can’t just keep Windows 7 indefinitely? I’m familiar with it, and don’t have any problems with it, so why bother switching?

You are one of the few who likes them. They may have to charge you. Just kidding of course.

“Is there any reason I can’t just keep Windows 7 indefinitely?”

At some point Microsoft will stop offering any support, automatic updates, etc etc etc for Windows 7. Who knows when that will be…

My H has upgraded at least one computer to Win 10. I think he had some issues with a Dell. On some he had been using Win 8 and likes 10 much more. He has his various PC toys so offhand I don’t know what is where. I signed up for 10 on my windows 7 Dell but will not rush- let them solve issues first. So far I have skipped the versions of Windows H has had that weren’t great. I’ll let early adopters work the kinks out first.

I’m not an early adopter either but for some reasons we couldn’t open our Excel and Word files, so might husband decided to register and upgrade.

There are no longer any non-security updates being provided for Windows 7. Security updates will cease 1/14/20.

Updates, shmupdates – they usually screw things up anyway. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, to coin a phrase. And it’s going to be a while until 2020!

???
where did you get that info?

MY Windows 7 computer was updated on Aug 13 with non security downloads.

From the link in my post, mainstream support ended in January. I used non-security updates as shorthand for no program enhancements. I think bug fixes are limited too, depends on the severity of the bug. So yeah, there may be some non-security updates, but they will be limited and decrease in number over time. I’m seeing 2 non-security updates in the August cycle which isn’t many.

I’m planning to wait until October to upgrade to 10 from 7. From my reading the first 10 service pack is scheduled to be available in October.

Here’s another page that shows the lifecycles of the various Windows editions: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/lifecycle

You can see what that means here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/gp/lifepolicy

The August 13th update was probably a security patch. Why do you believe it wasn’t?

^^because they were -

that’s why…

I can see the update history of every update on my computer

The 2nd one was for office 2010, not windows 7. But in any case, that’s not very many.

ETA: mainstream support for office 2010 ends this October.

Let the early adopters discover all the problems and get them fixed for us before we make the change in a few months. Especially those of us who skipped Windows 8 after seeing it on someone else’s computer.

^^ agreed…

It’s very good. Even my husband likes it. He has no complaint. Pictures are sharper too.

Thank you, everyone ~

FYI: how to opt out of Windows 10’s family reporting. See [this article](Windows 10 automatically spies on your children and sends you a dossier of their activity | Boing Boing). I also wonder if turning it off means they still collect that data.
