windows 95 to xp???

i have an old windows 95 os computer that i am trying to restore. i know that 95 is out of date and many programs arent compatible with it so would it be possible to install xp onto the computer instead?

If the computer meets XP’s minimum system requirements, then sure

Most likely, if it has a sticker that says “designed for Windows 95” or “designed for Windows 98,” then no.

95 is too old. For the most part, your system will require a substantial amount of memory in order to upgrade. I know that most 98’s have about 64MB, and 95’s have even less. From my understanding, you need approx. 128 MB of memory in your computer to upgrade to XP. Your Option: add memory. Once you have added memory, your computer will most like be extremely slow. You will have used all the memory, and thus the computer will continue to search for memory to run programs. Solution: Add more memory. Add another stick of 128MB. This will solve your memory problem. With that being said, when you are done, your computer will still suck.

On top of that, the upgrading software may not support 95 :)

Best bet: go buy $300 tower with XP on it. This will suit your needs. Use your old monitor, and enjoy!

buy a new but yet cheap computer with xp. i’d do that. that way you don’t have to worry about the amount of memory your 95 has.

or you can wait till the vista comes out  but that’ll be a long wait.

What is the vista? and when is it coming out?

Just install linux on it and extract the last ounce of performance …

vista is the next major version of windows…after the xp.

i think it’s coming out on jan. 2007 for home edition and this november for the business edition.

That is if it doesnt get delayed again.

i successfully installed xp home edition. so the previous drive (which had windows 95) had 64 mb of ram, and only a 4 gb harddrive. hence, my dad was able to find a 20 gb harddrive at his work which we used to install a copy of xp home edition (from our other computer). it works really well too.
