Winter 2013 Transfer Thread

Hey cool! I was kind of the same as you are last year. I’m from Ann Arbor but went to school at Pitt as well. Not too many people from Michigan go to Pitt so what made you decide to go there instead of State?

Both of my parents went to MSU so I wanted something different. I visited Pitt because someone recommended it and I loved it. It’s just very expensive, and Michigan is such a good school, so it makes sense to transfer.

Very true. I thought Pitt was nice except I didn’t really like how urban the campus was, the utter lack of school spirit and the food. The people there are great but I just felt like Upper Campus was the only part that actually felt like a campus. Forbes and Fifth just felt like going downtown. Market Central is also pretty awful except for the stirfry and Magellans. I’m glad you decided to make the right choice to go to UM and didn’t let the bad MSU influence get to you lol.

@anthonyxy21 I’m nervous about orientation. What is it like?
@UofPitt did you call them to make sure that your application was complete? Did you check Wolverine Access?

@Matis, Don’t be. It’s only a one day thing from 8-4. You’ll be put into groups and they’ll take you to a bunch of places, starting from the Union, introducing you to the school and doing administrative stuff like getting your MCard and registration. You’ll get chances to meet people and talk to them between events and even at some events.

Haha I have to be honest…I’m a huge MSU fan. I grew up that way. I’m really hoping to get into UM though. The fact that I only have 30 credits probably isn’t helping. And yes…market is awful haha. I like the urban campus, but it doesn’t exactly make up for the lack of school spirit.

@anthonyxy21 thanks man. What kind of event are there?

@Matisyahu…I checked WA. The only thing they needed (since my application carried over) were my transcripts and my ACT, and they were all received in July. I also received an email from them a while back saying that they received my application.

@UofPitt, not for much longer you’re not. You’ll convert to the good side when you come here lol. I love the fact that students at UM have so much pride in and enthusiasm about this school and it’s pretty infectious. And yeah, that 30 credit thing is probably going to hurt you. I think usually if you didn’t get accepted as a freshman you’ll need close to 45. But it’s kind of weird, if this is your third semester how do you only have 30 credits?

@Matis, Mostly stuff introducing the school to you and that administrative stuff I was talking about earlier. You’ll get your MCard, you’ll meet with an adviser and then you’ll register for classes. You’ll also have lunch and I can’t really remember what else.

@anthonyxy21…I took 15 credits my first semester, and 15 credits my second semester. I’m taking 15 now.

Oh so you actually have 45, never mind. You’re fine with credits. If you have somewhere around a 3.7 or higher you should be fine. I got in with a 3.71 and 46 credits.

@anthonyxy21 I’m kind of nervous about meeting new people in a different state you know? Especially since U-M is a HUGE school.

I have a 3.7 and I’m pre med. So my courses are tough. Who knows with UM though. I graduated high school with a 3.9 and a 30 on my ACT. I was class president on top of plenty of other things and I was denied.

Denied as in, denied my senior year in high school.

@UofPitt I think you should call U-M and ask about your admission decision. 3 months is an extremely long time.

I will. It isn’t rolling admissions…correct?

And did you just call the general admissions number? Not a specific person?

@Matis, you will have plenty of chances to make friends. If you live in a dorm and don’t stay in your room the whole time, it’s harder not to make friends. UM’s really not as large as you think it is. I see someone I know every day just going around campus. Also, UM has a huge OOS population, something like 40%. You’re going to meet plenty of people from all around the world.

@UofPitt, that’s pretty harsh. I was denied as well though my senior of high school so you’re pretty close to where I was. I also rolled my application from the fall semester to the winter semester. Don’t worry too much about how long you’re waiting because I got in exactly one year ago so chances are you’ll be getting the good news soon. I’m sure you’ve read it already but remember that basically credits and college GPA are all that matter. Don’t worry too much, I’m pretty sure you’ll get in. I mean you already have someone a year in front of you get in with pretty much the same stats as you. Good luck and I’m sure you’ll be saying Go Blue soon.

anthonyxy21…do you think it’s unusual that my application was completed in July and I still haven’t heard?

Not really. UM’s admissions office is known for being slow and unpredictable. There’s really no sense in trying to figure them out. And this is only my opinion, not fact but I think you might be a borderline applicant and they’re trying to figure out if there is still enough space to admit you.
