Winter Break Dorm Closure and Chinese Student Associations

So I have several questions about winter break -

1) Do all dorms close exactly on the 19th? If so, how long can you stay in them before you have to leave? For instance, is it possible to stay as late as noon? It just seems extremely odd to me that the dorms would close the day after the final date for examinations. Almost like they can’t wait to boot you out while you’re scrambling to pack…

2) Is there any safe, reliable source of transportation from the airport to Washington University, especially around dark (like 9-10pm for instance) that wouldn’t cost too much? A taxi would be a bit pricey for a poor college student.

1) Is there a Chinese Student Association or some other group similar to that on campus?

2) If so, is there any way to contact them, especially during the summer? I would greatly appreciate even a Chinese student’s contact information - all I really need is the advice of someone that my parents can understand who is rather familiar with the workings of WashU.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

I can answer some parts of your questions.

Winter Break:

2) You can take the free metro thing I think.

CSA

As for CSA, I met them during multicultural week. There are many cultural groups on campus similar to CSA like KSA, KISS, AAA, TSO, HKSA, ABA, VSA etc…

If you have facebook, you will see them around pretty often. I suggest you search CSA in groups and contact their president - Jimmy Khaw or Liz Ren if you have questions.

1) You definitely can stay until at least noon the next day. They don’t “kick you out” until late afternoon, anyway… I think it was around 5 p.m. this year. And if you can’t get a flight after that on the 19th and you’re really worried about spending all that time packing, I’m sure you’ll have friends in St. Louis from your floor that you could stay with for a night. I knew a lot of people who did that.

2) Yes, the Metro goes from campus to the airport. It’s not too long of a walk from the S40. And pretty much everyone will be using it to get there and back, so you’re guaranteed to be riding with other WashU students.

As RuralMinnesota said, there are a lot of CSA-type groups on campus, and they host a lot of events. I have a lot of friends in them, and I’m sure you could find the leaders of whatever organization you’re most interested in on facebook (or on the Student Government website if that fails - there’s a search engine for the different campus groups somewhere on there, and it’ll have their emails listed), and they’d be glad to talk with you. I’ve ran into many of them just randomly when with Chinese friends who are part of the group, and they’ve always been very receptive, and are some of the nicest people I’ve met at WashU.
