Winter Coats for boys who don't wear them

Ha- well he has skied a handful of times with friends so def wears it for that. And to walk the dog or shovel the driveway - but never wears to school since they do not have lockers- none of them wear coats to school.

I have a ski jacket and a snowmobile suit. Otherwise, I hardly ever wear a heavy coat.

My son just left the house (it’s 40 degrees) in shorts, a T shirt and a thin zip up. He had a Columbia jacket he would wear if it was really cold that got stolen at the gym (cut the lock off his locker and took everything).

I can’t imagine spending for The North Face or Patagonia for him, I would not even spend that on myself. The Columbia outlet has great deals on warm coats.

I got this Eddie Bauer jacket for my H a couple of years ago. He loves it. Says it’s very warm and light. He usually doesn’t gush over things so I bought him an extra for when his first wears out. I got my girls the women’s version of it also and they wear theirs a lot too, but my youngest upgraded to the women’s version of the llbean jacket posted earlier in the thread and says she wishes she had it earlier. She weighs 90 lbs and her lips turn blue in a swimming pool in 90 degree weather though.

They were on sale for $39 then and are decently priced now.

This is an interesting thread for me because I’ve been considering buying my high school senior son a nice winter jacket to prepare for college next year.
I know college kids generally do a lot more walking around outside than he does now and was planning on purchasing a somewhat pricey North Face jacket.
But when I asked him he said he’s happy to keep wearing his current jacket. Around here (Chicago suburbs), the kids don’t seem to wear jackets at all - the current trend is to wear flannel shirts as jackets - sometimes with fleece lining.
So last year I purchased this jacket and it was a big hit - Maplewood Hooded Shirt Jacket | Legendary Whitetails

I suppose if he is truly freezing next year at college we can revisit the idea of a warmer coat.

My son went to college in Boston. We live in CT so he had plenty of cold weather outerwear. He took the LLBean jacket he wore all the way through thigh school, but never wore it (he said). He asked for a navy pea coat for Christmas that year, and my dad asked him if he would like a leather jacket…which DS picked out. He said…that leather jacket was THE warmest of all of his outerwear plus he liked it. He got the pea coat his junior year.

Because he was a musician and dressed in formal wear pretty often, he also had a grey cashmere over coat…that he liked and wore over his tuxes and suits.

But the key ingredient here…HE chose every single coat himself.

Funny…he lives in Phoenix now…but he has a Northface system jacket with the windbreaker outer and a fleece inner.

Lots of inexpensive options as well. My S had a friend from CA at his college and the day of the first snow they took him to Old Navy and he got a winter coat on sale that I’m sure was just fine.

Amazon too- S24 just got invited to ski over the break and I ordered him a pair of black snow pants for $25 that get great reviews.

Adult male here in Chicagoland. I never wear a big coat. I have to be outside for more than 30 mins to think about wearing one. I do have one in the car with gloves and hats. I just hate being hot. I can usually get the driveway shoveled before I get cold. Staying warm is all about hands, head and feet.

Yeah, I didn’t expect that when I moved from Texas to Maine. If I’m outside briefly, a big coat is not worth the trouble. When we moved up here, my family gave me all these heavy sweaters and I never wore them, because they were too warm indoors. And now we have a heated steering wheel, so I probably won’t even wear gloves very often.

It’s not manly to wear a big coat in cold weather. Makes one look like a wimp. Even when I lived in Fairbanks, I pretty much never wore my big, puffy down coat. I usually wore a sweatshirt or heavy flannel shirt underneath a pullover ski jacket. When I lived in New York and Seattle for a few years after that, I never wore a real jacket. Just a zip-up sweatshirt.

Thanks for this link. I purchased one for my daughter who never asks for anything new. We signed up for text messages and received an extra $10 off.

Will be perfect for track meets in between her races.
