Raining on your parade… I used to love the Winter Olympics but the damage done to the mountains just to host them, in particular the removal of hundred years old firs, which we need to absorb carbon dioxide as many trees have died from the heat waves (due to climate change) and their role in preventing mudslides, whole pieces of the mountains falling onto houses or covering an entire village … I just can’t. For 2 weeks of spectator sports we may have caused irreversible damage that will lead to destruction and deaths. When I was in Milan last summer, and also as I went up to the Lakes where there were lots of road works and railway works to ensure everything would be up to date (which is good for Italians for sure), some places that were supposed to be reused couldn’t be so had to be torn down and replaced, it was heartbreaking because it’s so futile ultimately, and the Alps are necessary for our survival. (I’m actually hoping the 2030 Games won’t go through, they’re also in the Alps, because I don’t know if the mountains can survive that twice.)
At least we know that hockey is going to have tons of viewers.
Definitely the quad god. He got his start nearby and a teacher (reading specialist) friend of mine used to escort him out a bit early each day in elementary school to meet his dad to go to skating practice. Well, I’d watch him anyway, LOL.
There is a young lady also from nearby in skeleton.
Honestly, there are so many awesome sports to look forward to watching. I am hoping that between all of the stations, I will be able to see sports (rather than just hearing human interest stuff that doesn’t interest me). I even like watching curling. And I tried luge a couple years ago … what a sport (scary!).
It’s a selfish decision, IMHO. I understand that she wants to do this, but she hasn’t been performing well at all & her alternate is being denied an opportunity.
I’m watching a 2026 documentary about biathlon on Peacock. I had no idea that (1) the US hasn’t won a single medal in Olympic biathlon and B. Biathlon is the second most popular sport in Europe - by the number of spectators gathering to watch races. Wow.
Then I remembered that as a kindergarten-aged kid, I became obsessed with biathlon after watching a race on TV! I was mesmerized and drew a ton of pictures of athletes competing, I was that obsessed. Of course, I could have skis, but no one would give a rifle to a 5 year old, so the obsession faded away rather quickly.
Did anyone watch Glitter and Gold–it’s a documentary about ice dancing. Highly recommend it. The same people behind this documentary also did the one about Simone Biles Rising.
I haven’t watched it, so thank you for recommending. I am binging sports documentaries on Peacock and came across Golden. Couldn’t unglue myself from the screen! The documentary follows several US artistic gymnasts in their quest for a spot on the Olympic team to compete in Tokyo.
Back to Winter Olympics! Anyone remember the battles of the Brians and Carmens? Calgary ‘88.
The Battle of the Brians was so good … as was the battle between Debbie Thomas and Katarina Witt. IMO, skating has become awesome again … for years, it lacked the artistry that thankfully has returned to the sport.
WHY is she doing this to herself? I understand the extreme disappointment after so much hard work but GIRL you have to be able to use your knees/legs long after the Olympics are done! Even to ski leisurely!
That’s my thought, too. I like Lindsey Vonn and love watching her ski, but I can’t help wonder if she is taking a huge risk in permanently disabling herself.
This may have been asked before - forgive me if I didn’t notice.
Has anyone figured out a good way to subscribe to Peacock for the duration of the Olympics?
ETA - and what “level” or whatever should I get?
