Winter outerwear recommendations

I thought that this would be a good time to buy new winter coats/jackets online. I’m talking about jackets for my sons and a coat for me, casual, something like this:

[Women’s Down Commuter Long Coat from Lands’ End](<a href=“Lands' End | Swimwear, Outerwear, Casual Clothing and more”>http://www.landsend.com/products/womens-down-commuter-long-coat/id_243895)

We can’t wear down because of allergies, so the coat above is not a possibility. I’ve relied on Lands End for years, but their quality is now spotty. Even LLBean, formerly a reliable source, now has some quality issues. Can anyone recommend a website with reliable outerwear?

So are you looking for wool, or is that also out?
You might look at the Army/navy store.

[Cold weather parka](http://www.armynavysales.com/products/g.i.-n3b-extreme-cold-weather-parka)

I don’t really have any suggestions except to say that my D’s friend is having a terrible time trying to find a long down coat. D’s friend who is also from San Diego, but lives in NYC has been looking for a down coat while home for the holidays and has not been able to find one anywhere in town and all the ones she likes online are not her size or are sold out.

H and I visited our D in NYC in October and bought her a new long, black Patagonia down coat at REI in Soho. We were in REI Saturday morning and they had already sold out of the size small that D needed. They were able to get her a coat from one of their other stores and she picked it up the next week.

Thanks for the suggestions - I am not looking for wool, already have a lovely wool coat that I hardly ever wear. I’m looking for a casual, everyday winter coat. No down!

There are lots of winter coats on sale at the following sites: Nordstrom.com, Bloomingdales, Lord and Taylor, J. Crew and Zappo’s. Zappo’s does carry Patagonia for those who are looking and Zappo’s offers free shipping/free return, 365 days a year. I like a coat on J.Crew myself but wouldn’t buy online if final sale item.

I like my Columbia jacket that has omni-heat that helps reflect your body heat back at you and keep you warmer with less bulk. I get cold easily and it is the warmest jacket I’ve had. Love the Columbia lifetime warranty that comes with their garments. This is the replacement of a garment that I had 10 years ago that finally failed. All I had to pay was postage!

Obscenely expensive, but beautifully made and lovely and light. Tried it on yesterday.
[Patagonia Women’s Low Sky Parka](http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/womens-low-sky-parka?p=28391-0)

NY & Co have a poly filled long coat. Showmom, Macy’s has several Nautica and Ralph Lauren long down coats in size small, and a number of other long down coats in extra small if your friend is still looking. Zappos has some Cole Haan and Sam Edelman long down in small sizes.

BHG and I each own LL Bean’s Ultrawarm coats in long and 3/4 length, they are Vegan. They were purchased a few years ago, but are still sold by LL Bean. I got them for 60% off at the tail end of winter.

ECmotherx2 - thanks for the info. I will pass on to D so she can tell her friend. Her friend is still here in San Diego as her flight to NYC (JFK) was cancelled Saturday and she was not able to rebook until Wednesday.

I love Campmor! They stand behind everything they sell.

[Camping Gear & Outdoor Gear - Outerwear & Outdoor Clothing from Campmor.com](http://www.campmor.com/)

Agree with poster that say now is the time to buy, as all coats are on sale.

PS - while most people know Campmor as a website/catalog, they do have a retail store on Rt 17 in Paramus NJ with a very knowledgeable staff. It’s worth the trip, plus we don’t have sales tax on clothing in NJ.

Thanks for all the suggestions! BHM, those LLBean coats are filled with down. I can’t stand the thought of dragging around to stores. Online or nothing!

Sorry about that NYMomof2, but LL Bean must have changed the coats since I purchased ours 3 years ago, as we also do not do down or any other type of feather or leather or fur.

I’ll search the site to see if I can see if the coats are under a new name, but ours look exactly like the Ultrawarm coats.

Here is a jacket which is not down but primaloft. [The North FaceWomen’sJackets & Vests*WOMEN’S B TRICLIMATE JACKET](http://www.thenorthface.com/catalog/sc-gear/women-39-s-b-triclimate-jacket.html). Expensive but warm. North Face also has a jacket called thermoball, light but warm. It’s a short jacket though.

It’s hard to find a non-down casual jacket. I have a north face down jacket, it is so warm but light. I love it, it’s called a transit jacket.

My H has a 3in1 jacket with a fleece liner with a shell. He likes it but I think it’s bulky.

Down is out, but Eddie Bauer has other coats that I like, like this one:

[WeatherEdge® Girl on the Go® Trench Coat | Eddie Bauer](<a href=“Page Not Found”>Page Not Found)

But I really wanted something full length…

I love the NorthFace triclimate coat, deb922, but I’m too cheap to pay that much. It also looks short, although it’s hard to tell because they don’t show it over clothes.

I’m too cheap too NYMomof2 but it looked perfect. It’s 35" in length so pretty long.

I have a landsend 3-1 jacket from years ago. I think it was called artic parka, it had a down liner but I have never worn the liner, it is way too hot with the liner in. I also looked like the Michelin Man. I wonder if there is something like that and you could not wear the down.

My S bought a shell and then a prima loft liner last year. He usually wears one or the other but they go together.

Another site to look at is getzs dot com. They are out of Marquette Michigan. They know how to dress for the weather and they might have some more options.

You may want to call REI and tell them what you are looking for. I’ve found their people to be very helpful and friendly. Also, there are northface outlets around. I know there’s one in Portland, but there are others also.

If you can do white, REI outlet has something called columbia pearl district that might work.

I am a huge fan of Columbia and their Omni-Shield. I bought myself a ski jacket with the Omni-Shield right after Christmas when everything is on sale and it really does a fantastic job keeping me warm. Yesterday I spent 7 (yes, 7) hours shoveling and today another 3 hours shoveling. The jacket kept me very toasty warm. In fact, I was very sweaty afterwards so I learned to not wear multiple layers with it. It was -12 degrees here today and they say the windchill was -40 and I was just fine outside shoveling. Seriously the warmest coat ever.
