Winter/warm vacation ideas

Where have you been (or planning to go) to warm up this winter?

(yea, I know it’s a bit late to ask. but we accomplished some family travel priorities, instead of our usual Feb warm weather respite trip. thinking about a possible March trip)

We are going to Arizona. We will be mostly in Phoenix with a side trip to Tucson and Bisbee. Beginning of April.

I think next year, we might combine the Arizona trip with a visit to San Diego.

By April, we are tired of the cold weather, and we also don’t love the gnatty bugs that come in early spring.

Cabo in March

Interesting you mention Cabo. The past 2 years we’ve gone to all-inclusives in Puerto Vallerta (Rui Palace) and Play Del Carmen (Iberostar). My husband loves that kind of relaxing vibe, interspersed with a few tours since we love history and culture too. I was wondering how Cabo compares, and there are direct flights. Safety/security is a big priority… any recommended resort or area of Cabo?

We are going to Solaz. I went five years ago. I heard scare stories like bodies hanging off bridges.

Hmmm. No. Clean. Safe. Modern. Nice. Like Florida.

I am flying southwest. Nashville to a Houston to Cano. Home via Kansas City.

Our place is $$ - like $800+ a night. . Admittedly my company is paying. Hosting car dealers who won a contest.

But if I extended, there’s a Hyatt Place half way to the airport for like $135 I would stay if I extended but decided not to. Ratings are strong for that place.

My company would not go if dangerous and zillions go there.

Everyone has to be comfortable where they go but I saw zero issues.

The hotel is on Los Cabos but when I went 5 years ago the young people ubered into Cabo San Lucas every night to chase girls and get drunk. They all came back fine.

Ps you can never go wrong with Puerto Rico - with luxury, city and even off the beaten path, more primitive and different like Vieques - PR has it and great eats everywhere.

Winter is not really a time I travel besides within our state. But I am going to Portland Oregon next month for a work trip. Will it be warmer than home? Unsure!

We go to Little Palm Island for a 5 day break every year. We fly direct to Key West. Beautiful spot.

These are from last year and some of the wildlife that’s everywhere.

Sitting on my 8th floor balcony in Maui overlooking the Pacific as I type.
Will head to Kauai tomorrow. This is my view, but during sunset.

I know that view! We’ve stayed in that building a few times, most recently in fall 2023.

Of course our best winter vacation was this…this is the beach at the Hotel Serena in Gesenyi Rwanda. Part of a three week trip that started in South Africa.

I will step outside, or if necessary head inland. Yesterday it was about 10 degrees warmer at the zoo than our house in the afternoon.

We used our Marriott points at the Phoenician in December. Highly recommend Phoenix/Scottsdale in winter! Going to Oahu in a few weeks.

Lots of nice feedback (for me and others ready to have a warm getaway). Are there Hawaii locations, other than Waikiki Beach, that would not require a car?

We were in SoCal late December-early January. Right before the fires started.

We have plans to go to Maui with D, SIL and GD next week, but there is a possibility we may not go due to H’s recent health issues. Fingers crossed.

We also have a trip to Puerta Vallarta planned on early April. That will be me, H and S.

We live in an area known for long cold winters, we are ok with that but do enjoy a few escapes to break it up. If it were up to me, I would never leave here from May- October.

If all you want is to swim, sit on the beach, go for short-ish (max 5 miles) hikes or runs, eat out, and just relax, I highly recommend Ko Olina on Oahu, Kaanapali Beach in Maui, and Waikoloa/A-bay on the Big Island.

ETA: if you want to get out to snorkel off a boat, zip line, etc., there are companies that pick people up at major hotels and drop them back off after the tour.

Inspired by this thread, I just booked a trip to Maui!

May-October is a fabulous time here in the PNW! February-March are the worst because the weather is unpredictable and generally iffy, and there are no holidays like T-giving or Christmas or NYE to distract from the weather.

We went to Grand Cayman in December. We stay on the quiet side of the island. Some people might hate it, because there’s not much to do, but it’s where we become “type B” and just mostly relax.
