Wireless router?

Are we allowed to use wireless routers in our dorms?

Some of the current students may be able to answer this better, but my understanding is that you cannot use wireless routers in the dorms. Take a look at the Resnet page on NEU’s website for more info (ie FAQs and move-in guide)

ResNet

It looks like they are allowed actually, here is what it says in the Appropriate Use Policy:

Students may connect personal or privately-owned routers and/or wireless access points to ResNet network segments, under the following conditions:

The residence hall in which the owner lives does not have 100% NUwave wireless coverage.

The relevant device(s) is/are registered in the legal name of their owner, using the ResNet Registration service.

The registrant, by virtue of connecting their router and/or wireless access point to ResNet, agrees to take sole responsibility for installation, registration, configuration, operation and security of their device(s).

A residence hall occupant installing a router and/or wireless access point will be held responsible for the actions of all parties connecting to and/or using their device(s), with or without their knowledge, and for adhering to IS-recommended security practices.

Information Services will not support routers or wireless access points, nor resolve any conflicts such devices may cause with other students’ routers or wireless access points.
Northeastern reserves the right to reconfigure or disable the ResNet port(s) serving any private router and/or wireless access point which interferes with NUwave or any other University service.

In order to receive IS support to resolve a problem reported by a student using a privately-owned router and/or wireless access point, such problem must be recreated while connected to the ResNet port in question with privately-owned device(s) out of the connection path.

They told us last year we could not use them but plenty of kids did. One of the kids I lived with had one set up and he never had any problems. They say you can’t have a lot of stuff but really I never heard of housing/resnet enforcing much.

As the AUP says, you can have routers where there is not 100% coverage (currently only International Village). Sadly, as more dorms become 100% wireless, you will not be allowed to have your own private Wi-Fi.

You absolutely can, except for in IV! Policy started this year (fall 2009). I currently have a completely legal one in my room. There are only two issues with it. One, Resnet will not help you set up or troubleshoot a wireless router at all (my dad is good with computers and set it up for me, because I break everything I touch). Two, you should make sure to set a password or only allow certain computers to access it, else you could run into security issues.

Wait what?
I thought we’d have wireless internet access throughout the entire campus? No?

wi-fi throughout campus but not in every dorm
