I searched through some other threads on wisdom teeth- but none of them have mentioned coronectomies, so I thought I would post here to see if anyone has any experience–

I waited a long time to deal with my wisdom teeth and finally decided to deal with them this year (first year in grad school). Turns out that all 4 of my wisdom teeth need to come out, and that the two lower ones have roots pretty close to the nerves. My oral surgeon recommended a coronectomy, where the roots of the tooth are left in place, so that there is a much smaller risk of nerve damage. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this? And how recovery compared to normal wisdom teeth extraction

When I had mine out many years ago, the oral surgeon said that he had to leave one root of one of my wisdom teeth. I haven’t had any problems with it. I’ve been “blessed” with 4 roots in some teeth that usually have 3 roots.

Recovery is exactly the same, they just leave a little bit down in there. 99% of the time, you’re fine, no ill effects and you get to keep your nerve endings. If something does come up later, usually the oral surgeon who performed the initial surgery will fix it.

Yes, I had a coronectomy on all four wisdom teeth. The procedure went smoothly, and I’ve had no problems since then.

However, every time I’ve gone to the regular dentist (rather than an oral surgeon), they’ve become confused when looking at the x-ray. Either most dentists have never heard of this procedure, or somehow I’ve just been choosing seedy dentists for the past few years. It’s a small annoyance, and has made me sort of paranoid whether the surgeon was doing something out of the ordinary in leaving the roots in. But, the procedure went well, there have no been complications since, and the oral surgeon was extremely reputable–so I assume I have no cause to worry.

Im due to have a coronectomy soon…have been panicking!! Everything still ok with you guys?? Any post op complications?? What is recovery time for this procedure? xx

I didn’t know there was an official name for this. I had this done when I got my wisdom teeth out. My two lowers still have parts of the root in there. Every once in a great while I have some minor discomfort but it’s been 20+ years since I had them out and no issues at all. My post-op recovery was simple, no swelling, no dry socket or anything like that. I was fine the day after my surgery.

Years ago, I had my wisdom teeth extracted and the oral surgeon left a fragment of the tooth below the gum line. That whole side of my face hurt. I went back, had X-rays taken, and he immediately saw the problem and took the fragment out. Fortunately, he did not ask me to pay for the additional procedure.
