<p>Effective September 1, 2007 current faculty, staff, and students will be able to swipe their University issued ID card and ride RIPTA for free, anytime, anywhere in the state. Brown’s investment in this new “UPASS” program is the latest effort in one of many transportation initiatives benefiting it’s employees, students, and the broader community.</p>

<p>I never use RIPTA, but for some reason this actually makes me happy.</p>

<p>Brown students in general are known for not using RIPTA. I’m not sure if having free RIPTA will get anyone to use it, but I’m far more likely to take the trolly down the hill now than I ever was before (or more importantly, back up). But since I have a car now anyway…</p>

<p>the ripta site isnt working for me for some reason. what areas does ripta service and stuff? does it take you to different parts of providence (i.e. near the mall, music venues, airport, etc.)</p>

<p>RIPTA will take you all around the state of Rhode Island. There are ways to take the Trolly down to the Kennedy Plaza area, but from there, it’s faster to walk to the mall or concert venues then it would be to take the bus.</p>

<p>So essentially, yes, but the things within the city are all too easy to get to by foot to make it useful for Providence travel.</p>

<p>What this does mean is free travel to Newport, etc.</p>

<p>Sweet, now I won’t have to pretend to have a RISD id to get free trips under the tunnel!</p>

<p>don’t forget that RIPTA has a bus which goes to and from the airport. it’s always been cheaper than the shuttle, and now it’s free (although you won’t get dropped off at your exact dorm location, but outside of Paragon is close enough for me)</p>
