Withdraw or Audit?

Asking for my nephew (junior pre-med).

Due to extenuating circumstances this semester, my nephew has the option of withdrawing or auditing a course this late in the semester.

If he takes the W, it will be his second W in the same course (withdrew late last semester due to the same extenuating circumstance this semester).

Right now, he’s more attracted to the idea of auditing the course. His thought is that it shows that he stuck through the whole class the second time (usually, the last day to withdraw is mid-semester). He’s still a bit unsure though; deadline to submit his decision is tomorrow. Only drawback to the L (that he’s aware of) is that it will affect his financial aid.

Overall, which option will do him better in the long run (keeping in mind that his extenuating circumstances are documented)? Which would you choose if you were in his place?

Auditing has no value on a medical app except raise question marks. Withdraw has ramifications, especially for a second time.

If this is a science subject, he may have problems with his app.

Is it better to address the question marks from an audit? Or are the ramifications of the second W more positive? (please forgive me if my questions sound ignorant, I don’t have a clue about med admissions)

The course is a lower level math course; he does not plan to apply until after he graduates. He also plans to take two or three more math classes after this lower level class (including Calc I and Stats).

Can anyone else chime in? He’s about to submit a decision in a couple hours; leaning towards another W right now after the comments above.

His premed adviser wasn’t helpful at all so I’m hoping some of you can chime in.

The audited class probably won’t even be noticed since it is not a prerequisite. I would choose that over the W but, I don’t know what you mean by

Only you know what weight to put on this. If it means a significant amount of $ then it’s not worth it. Please keep in mind that adcoms worry about students that they feel may not be able to stay with the program. This is a bad situation for everyone involved and is a potential red flag.

By affecting his financial aid, he means that he’ll need to give back about $400.

Not sure how much of a difference it will make but with the amount posted above, would the audit be worth the difference in the end?

We’re also aware that it is a potential red flag. He’s strong in all other aspects of his stats so we’re just keeping our finger cross when it does come time to apply.

What subject?

Math (college algebra)
