Withdrawal while abroad

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has experience with a student withdrawing while studying abroad, and what then happens to the finances. I understand that once the student completes 60% of the semester, they will not owe any federal or scholarship money after withdrawing. But my question is, are the semester start dates consistent with the home university, or do my semester dates in my study abroad country only matter? (The German semester starts and ends later, thus a later 60% benchmark.)
I would think my finances only matter with the home university’s calandar, while I am only paying tuition there, and the home uni also is in control of my federal grants.

Thank you!!!

This would be a good thing to ask your home institution. After all, they are the ones who will need to handle the paperwork.

At my son’s public university, the later you withdraw the more it costs. If he withdrew after the drop date (which is something like 4 weeks into the semester), we’d have to pay for the entire semester but he wouldn’t get any credit. And we’d use up one semester of state and federal aid that we wouldn’t get back.

I agree, you really need to talk to your school. If you withdraw from your home institution, you may no longer be eligible for the study abroad program.
