Hi, I am planning on transferring next fall to a different university because I have changed my major. I’m currently a Pre-PA undergrad student with a heavy workload, but this is usually something I can handle. At the beginning of this year, I was sexually assaulted. I have been extremely depressed with major anxiety and exhibiting symptoms of PTSD. It has gotten so bad, that I’m not even sure how I can finish this semester with decent grades. If I do withdraw from the university in order to get better and receive counseling, how badly could this impact my financial aid and will it look bad on my transcripts when applying to ASU? I’m just not sure if I can deal with school right now…I feel like my mental and emotional health is severely debilitating.
Go meet with your advisor, and ask about a medical withdrawal. Get help with discussing the effect on your current aid with the financial aid office. You are smart to think about that. You may find that you need to leave after a certain date in order to not need to repay some of your federal financial aid.
When you apply for admission at ASU, this semester will just be a whole bunch of W grades. You will tell ASU that you left for medical reasons, that the issue has been resolved, and that you now are ready to resume your studies. You don’t need to tell them (and they can’t ask) what the medical reason was.
