Anyone have experience with the Witt Fellows program?
Dated info.
Then University of Alabama President Witt recruited family member to be among first group of University Fellows–now renamed Witt Fellows.
President Witt told me he modeled University Fellows program after the University of Georgia Foundation Fellows program. Both are outstanding opportunities.
Great program for connections to internships & jobs.
P.S. The Honors College did adopt two of my recommendations, but this was over a decade ago. Still in effect. Meaningful benefits. UA Honors College works hard to benefit their students.
OP: I just read a September, 2024 post regarding colleges that your son visited. I am familiar with several of them (WFU, U Georgia, U South Carolina). Based on your son’s reaction to these schools, he should like U Alabama Honors College. Hard to beat Athens, Georgia and the University of Georgia, but Tuscaloosa is smaller and still Southern. Consider the University of Mississippi Honors College if he wants a truly Old South experience. Lots of Northerners attend.
As an aside: U Alabama has more non-resident students than residents. Greek life is unusually important at U Alabama-moreso than at U Georgia (and it is important at UGA.)
My daughter was a semi finalist and did the zoom interview - does anyone know when they are announcing finalists?
My son was told “early Feb”
Thanks for your insights. He had his zoom interview as a semi-finalist for Witt several days ago and was extraordinarily nervous (really, his first interview ever) so he’s not hopeful. Still has a Blount interview late Feb, which seems like a fun community and a great place to land if you’re a small town kid heading into a big university setting. Won’t hear from UGA or U South Carolina until mid-March (deferred EA), but he was able to submit an additional letter of rec from our state senator to UGA today (today is the deadline) so fingers crossed that makes a difference. As oos, UGA seems nearly impossible. Wake is likely a no, but is a dream school. Got deferred (along with everyone else) to U Miami.
Does anyone have information on the differences between the Witt University and the Randalls Research program, both at Alabama? Thank you!
I am also wanting to know this - daughter made finalist for both but the interviews are on different weekends and we can only choose one. I’m thinking we might go to the RRSP one, but I know we might be missing out on a chance at the elite scholarship through Witt
Thank you! Are the scholarships different? I have not heard of anyone enrolling in both, so potentially you have to pick one?
Announced
Yes she got the email already - she is a finalist for both programs but they interview on different weekends and can only make one trip so we will probably do Randall because she has a Ohio interview the same weekend as Witt - seems like all these schools want to interview at the same time!
I think the elite scholarship is only for Witt, but not to say they wouldn’t qualify for merit money if enrolled in Randall. However they only give the elite to a few of the kids.
Thank you! Do you know what the elite scholarship details are? Is it a full ride?
There is always the UA Competitive Achievement Scholarship which is similar award to the elite, but does not require Witt acceptance. There are only 8 Elites give out per year. RRSP should be good for anyone interested in research or STEM.
Did you ever decide about which to attend? We are headed to Tuscaloosa for the Witt finalist weekend this week and he loved his Blount Scholars interview yesterday. Bama is looking pretty good these days and making my kid feel seen and appreciated. Roll Tide.
She went to Randall Research - she arrived today, dinner tonight and interview tomorrow. She is interviewing for a full ride at Ohio State the same weekend as Witt and she couldn’t do both and Witt never responded to questions on doing the interview virtually. Good luck to your son!
And good luck to your daughter!
How did everyone do? Rejected for Witt after attending the finalist weekend. Rejected for additional merit scholarships because they would not eclipse automatic aid.
Still on RRSP waitlist as far as I know. I wish I could appeal that scholarship decision. It might be the only hope for attending.
My daughter is going to not accept her RRSP so I know of at least one spot that is opening up! It was a tough decision but she got a full ride at another school and Alabama didn’t give her any more money than the auto amount.
