Wolverine may become next Surgeon General

Sanjay Gupta has been approached by Obama to be the next Surgeon General of the US. He would be the third (the other two being Leonard Scheele and Antonia Novello) Wolverine to hold the position…as well as the youngest ever Surgeon General.

[CNN: Gupta approached about surgeon general post - Yahoo! News](http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090106/ap_on_go_pr_wh/surgeon_general)

He also is from my hometown of Novi and went to Michigan for undergrad and for medical school. He even completed his neurosurgery residency in Ann Arbor. Way to go Sanjay, hope you get this high honor.

At this stage, I think the job is his unless he choses not to take it. But I doubt he will refuse though. It is a great honor.

Go Sanjay! Go Novi!

What can I say? The guy rocks my world.

Way cuter than C Everett Koop

Gupta is a great choice! Hoedown, you are so right!
Anyone, want to guess why Congressman John Conyers (D-Detroit) isn’t supporting Gupta?

[Conyers opposes CNN’s Gupta for surgeon general | CharlotteObserver.com](http://www.charlotteobserver.com/194/story/460146.html)

I am baffled. Gupta is a famous local son (Novi is a suburb of Detroit). Why would Conyers be against it? He says “inexperience” - but that sounds like bunk.

He’s not from his district. Novi is too upscale for his tastes I guess. I hate to say it, but if he were black…

Well, from a public health standpoint I guess one could argue Gupta is not the most experienced choice.

But if you want someone that the public recognizes, likes, and might tend to listen to (and you might argue that this is a huge plus for the job) then he’s a strong choice.

hes of indian origin.

The person that Conyers was pushing for surgeon general was black. I didn’t even know it until i read it in the paper this morning. It is a shame that I knew this would be the case.
