Women...beauty maintenance in this time of sheltering at home

I thought I’d set an appointment for mid to late May to maybe beat the rush when stay-at-home orders are lifted. Of course the salon was closed, as I expected, but unfortunately they didn’t have an email address listed as I was hoping.

The men’s hair place is open, though (the sports themed one). WTH???

@CottonTales If you already have extra virgin olive oil, I’ve heard that’s great too, and they say a little goes a long way. I’ve used plain petroleum jelly around my eyes. My skin was very happy and I’d still be using it, but it smeared my glasses and I had to start using something more absorbent.

I do not color my hair, but my friend’s hairdresser mixed up her color for her and left it outside her salon for her to pick up. Paid with a credit card over the phone, I think. My friend’s husband put it on for her after watching a how-to YouTube video. She said he did a great job!

I was scheduled to get my hair cut this week. My hair is all one length and about chin length. Not going doesn’t really impact me that much. It will just be longer and all one length. However, I mailed my hairdresser a check for my normal amount for a cut/style plus a more-than-the-usual tip. I plan to send her that once every six weeks (how frequently I usually go) until this passes.

I also don’t do manicures, but friends with the dip or gel stuff (I don’t even know what the different types are - lol) ordered pure acetone for removing it.

I have observed that being the pretty low-maintenance person I am has meant I have had an easier adjustment. I have some friends that routinely do hair styling/coloring, facials, mani/pedis, eyebrows, massages, Botox, and have personal trainers that come to their homes! That is a lot of adjusting, and I feel for them!

I went to beauty school out of high school and have done DH’s hair since we met in college and, later, our son’s hair until he went to the academy. Now the Army just buzzes it for him every few weeks. I’ve been cutting and coloring my own hair and doing my own nails since high school, so no changes in our house during this time. I’ve gotten more low-maintenance with my face as I age, but I still wash and blow-dry/style my hair and put on a bit of makeup every day whether I’m going out or not. I guess we all look the same here.

I’m pretty much a low maintenance person, so no change for me. I cut my own hair, and started coloring it about 5 years ago. Coloring is easy to do by yourself. Just follow the directions inside the box. I was worried the first time I tried it–I thought it would take a lot more skill than it did, but there was nothing to it.

@ChoatieMom wins! Jealous

I was told that there is a big debate in the hairdresser community if they should sell their customers professional hair coloring materials. The usual rule is that professional color is to be used only by professionals.

Some hairdressers are shipping their customers product and some aren’t. Some hairdressers would like to sell you their product instead of trying to correct bad color when this is all over.

I’ve never been so jealous of those with long hair that can go longer between cuts. I was scheduled to go today, I have an appointment rescheduled in a month if the stay at home order is lifted.

I was the one that discussed getting feet ready with Stridex Pads, then moisture. I read it on the internet a couple years ago and it really works. I’d say it takes about 2 weeks for them to look a lot better, then another 2 weeks for them to look really good.

I color my own hair every other month, then have it done by my stylist. I used to just do the roots with Miss Clairol root touch up, which isn’t bad. I’ve recently started using L’Oréal dark brown all over color, as it just gives more product, stays on longer and I can run it through all my hair for 5 minutes before I wash it out. I like it so much, I think I’m going to just start doing that for 1 more month before I do it professionally. It’s messy though, so I need to prep my area better with coverings, and start by washing it out in the tub faucet first instead of shower faucet, as the dye flings everywhere on the tiles . It’s messy, but I save $85.

I have thin nails that never grown long. I had them dipped in January for a short vacation and it just ruined them. So I have been keeping them very short (which you are supposed to do during this time), and nothing on them. They are actually looking pretty healthy.

Other than that, I continue with my normal routine. I don’t wear mascara during this time, though. Easy handed with everything else.

I haven’t worn my contacts or earrings, so I think I need to start doing both, maybe on the weekends when my hubbie sees me all day!

@deb922 , don’t be jealous of the long hair. It looks awful unless it’s put back in a ponytail or bun, and my head can only deal with the tautness and scalp being pulled for so long. When I wear it down, it looks awful unless it’s washed and styled, and I have no inclination to do that everyday.

I scared myself looking in the mirror yesterday!

High maintenance girl here. I have curly, frizzy hair. In normal times, I go in for a 3-process (roots, high and low lights) color treatment and cut. Even if my stylist mixed the colors and talked me thru step by step, there is no way I’d be able to pull off a DIY job.

I bought some Clairol root touch up and applied it. Wrong color. (Too light.) So I am dusting on the Madison Reed root cover powder until my new color kit arrives.

I didn’t realize how much I have done until everything started closing. I too am in the salon every couple of weeks for either roots, highlights or a haircut. My hairdresser is offering home delivery twice a week of your custom color, color brush, instructions and glaze. I was going to hold out until she reopened but now that we are looking well into May I am going to have to give this a shot. She will also deliver product for you. You can pay by check for Venmo

The biggest killer is that European Wax center is closed. Ugh. D and I both go every two weeks because I don’t like to have to pluck in-between. Ha! Now I’m plucking something every day!

This is going to sound crazy, but I put Aquaphor under my eyes and in between my eyebrows and it keeps puffiness and wrinkles at bay. I had an allergic reaction after a surgery and my whole face got red and swollen and my dermatologist recommended that I do it. I’ve done it ever since and my skin looks great.

I also peeled the gel off of my fingers and toes. I just filed my nails down and put clear coat on them. I did my own pedicure. Let’s just say I’m glad it’s still too cold for sandals here. Definitely something I need to leave to the professionals!

Agree with the Cerave product recommendation. I’ve used both the day and night creams.
I’ve been coloring my hair for 30ish years. I go to Sally beauty supply and by Wella (color charm?) colors, that I mix myself (2/3 light brown, 1/3 medium, and then twice as much of the white stuff as the combined color). They have a measuring bottle so it’s really not hard.
If you’re new to it and going to try, you may want to put conditioner on the ends of your hair before you start, and I have heard of people putting Vaseline or something along their hairline around their face, BUT, I’ve never tried that. I use a brush to paint my roots first. If I get it on my face or ears, I use Seabreeze on a cotton pad to get it off. (I know there must be other things that work too, but I don’t know what). After about 40 minutes, I get in the shower and mix it around kind of like you’d do shampoo. After about 1 minute I start to rinse. Then wash and condition as normal. Consider leaving conditioner on for a couple of minutes.

Someone on CC recommended Style Edit a couple of years ago. It’s a root touch up and it works great for me. I should color my hair every 3 weeks, but I try to go 4 between colors.

I don’t color my hair, so I haven’t faced that dilemma, but I’m definitely due for a haircut. I have curly hair that gets very straggly at the ends if I don’t get it cut every 3-4 months. I’ll also be trying to make an appt with a new stylist when we can since I won’t be going back to where I used to live anymore. I’d been getting my hair done by my previous stylist whenever I’d be back in the area. We’re on stay at home in VA for another 2 months, so I guess I’ll be wearing my hair tied back for awhile.

My stylist does threading so I’m plucking, too.

I got some root concealer left which I will use for our Zoom seder. There is no way I can do my own color. It would be a disaster.

So my tip for that issue is hats! )

I’ve been moisturizing, moisturizing, moisturizing.

I’ve found the best thing to keep my hands soft is the CVS equivalent to O’keefe’s foot cream. I’ve never needed to buy the hand cream but I will from now on.

It does a wonderful job keeping my feet from cracking.

Except for cutting my nails - which are hard as rocks, I’m just leaving the polish from the shellac mani I got at beginning of March. I had a pedi in February, before I went to Florida Still looks pretty good and I won’t be wearing sandals for awhile yet, so.

I’m only putting a little makeup on when I have FaceTime meetups. But lots of lip moisturizer so my lips don’t crack.

This was in my paper today.

Well, I put a Lululemon headband on this morning and let me tell you it feels great to get all hair away from my face!

I have short hair. In the cool months I wear it more “straight” though it is actually quite wavy and curly. I’ll move to wearing it “curly” soon and that may help with it feeling too long. I have one of the Peanut trimmers that I can and have used on the back of my hair to trim/shave the back of my neckline and the sort of stacked area at the neck. But my top hair is starting to feel weighty.

I use Clairol Root Touch Up just on my temples. My hair is quite dark, nearly black but I use the dark brown and have for years. I apply part of the kit about every 4 weeks. The kit usually lasts me 3 applications as I just need it in some spots and not my “roots”.

I’m a very, very, very basic make up person anyway. I’ve just been putting moisturizing eye cream, a little blush and a Burt’s Bees lip color on in the morning (of course Aveeno underneath all that).

I didn’t mention my eyebrows before, which I usually have waxed, along with my lip every 3 weeks. My father blessed my brother and I with a unibrow and thick black brows. Even with chemo 27 years ago, that hair continues to grow like crazy! We actually joke that when I was old, I would have to draw brows on; don’t think that will ever happen.

Since my vision is not a good as it should be due to cataracts, which I was hoping to get taken care of this year, I don’t notice the hairs; of course I know they are there! I can tweeze some, but again, the vision makes it harder. Where I go is small and private, so as soon as they open, I will be there!

My 16 year old son ordered an ear piercing kit from Amazon and pierced his own ears last month. Much to our surprise! He said it didn’t hurt “much,” whatever that means. But it might be worth a shot if you need to pierce your ear before stores open again.

My brows are a mess and my nails are a mess. I’ve been avoiding makeup, using only SPF moisturizer and eye cream along with my prescription skin meds, but I have to say that my skin really likes being make-up free (hardly any breakouts even during this stressful time). I had my hair done two days before the state shut down salons, so that’s okay.

As sandal season approaches, I’ll have to give myself my own pedicures (I refuse to wear sandals without toenail polish).

The real issue is my husband’s hair. I bought a trimmer online and am watching videos on how to use it because he’s starting to look like an aging Greg Brady with a bald spot. Men’s hair is easier to cut than women’s and if all else fails, I’ll just go really short with it!

I use a powdered root concealer called Style Edit. It’s great…I can really conceal my roots for a long while using it…and I have an extra container (each one lasts bout a year) if needed. You can purchase it through Amazon…if they are shipping that sort of stuff.

I took the polish off my fingernails…they needed a rest from the gel polish anyway. My regret is not buying a small nail tools set. I need to ferret through my house…wondering if one is here!

Luckily I had my hair colored and cut two days before everything closed. My cut is way shorter than usual so I have a couple of months of hair growing before that’s an issue. I also made the decision around Christmas to grow my bangs out…so I don’t need to worry about cutting them at all! Whew.

My H has been doing his own buzz cutting of whatever little hair he has left for a few year.

He bought an Andis if anyone needs to know a brand. He’s been very happy with it. AFAIK.
