Yeah, I’ve been tying my hair back a lot. It’s finally long enough to stay in the band. Makeup is more skin care than anything else – moisturizer, primer, tinted sunscreen instead of a “real” foundation. I’ve always kept my nails short and uncolored. Overall my routine is more an attempt at sound basic maintenance as opposed to a lot of ongoing finishing touches.
But lipstick! When our kids were tiny, thirty years ago, a group of my mom friends had a thing going around that the more intense the lipstick you needed on a given day, the fewer hours of sleep you had gotten. Adding current stress levels to the equation I’ve been having a little fun with that around the house. My meetings and socializing are audio only, husband thinks anything is cute, and the dogs are color-blind.
I have purchased some Root Touch Up (have used previously) and some of the spray on stuff as well. I have been wanting to get off the hamster wheel of coloring for some time, yet every month when I go for color, I am sucked back in. Maybe now is the time to start the transition. I have been following a color guy in CA on Instagram for months who takes people from color to grey in a day. He discusses the process and one of my stylist’s girls is supposed to be really good with innovative color processes like this (she won’t do it). Maybe it’s time to just spray the stuff on until I can discuss at salon. I guess I’m lucky if this is my biggest challenge along with locating some toilet paper in the next week or so.
I bought a Clairol root touch up kit but haven’t used it yet. I hope it doesn’t mess up my color once I can go back to my salon. At home three weeks now I’ve been doing my regular skin care routine, but applying my minimal makeup, concealer, mascara, blush. It makes me feel better and I don’t feel like such a slug. Lately though I have all this time and I’m digging into my ignored makeup palettes and playing with different colors, looks ect. Stuff I wouldn’t be seen in on a daily basis. It’s kinda fun and passes the time.
I’ll be 43 this summer and I’m noticing alot more grey strands. I’ve been inside for so long that my hair is much darker so they show up more… that’s my story!!
My last cut was last May. She cut it way too short, so I was growing it back out. Of course w/ not being able to get out b/c of my back and now the lock down, it’s so long it’s pulling the curl right out. Pony tails and hats till I can see a hairdresser, I guess. But I’ve always been very low maintenance. I haven’t worn makeup in easily 15 years.
Don’t know if it’s been mentioned yet (haven’t read all of this thread), but a tip for anyone who is a coloring novice. Make sure you get petroleum jelly. I color my 12 yr old’s hair crazy colors and I always coat his forehead, ears, neck, temples, etc w/ jelly. This keeps the color from getting onto the skin. First time I did my son’s hair, he had a purple ear for almost 2 weeks!
^^thank you for the petroleum jelly tip. I will be selecting a dye for my roots today and will see how it goes. I think I will try 10-14 days from now as my roots are just starting to show and I find WOW powder works pretty well for at least a week. Since people are seeing me on zoom, I don’t think it’ll be obvious for quite awhile so I have some time.
My nails grow quickly and I’ve always had manicures about every two weeks but just get them buffed. Because they’re very strong, I have never been very skilled at filing them myself. Truly a first world issue but that’s another thing I’m going to have to figure out as they’re already getting pretty long.
So my daughter ordered this 1 week ago and it arrived yesterday. She swore this is everything she will ever need - very easy to straighten or curl or make it voluminous. A little pricey but worth it.
Funny timing! I follow one beauty blogger. I decided to see what she recommends and she just put up a video today on this issue of hair color at home. Based on her experience, I’m going to get the Revlon Root Touch Up product. Amazon was out of my shade (or, my best guess of my shade) but my local CVS has it in stock. The helpful person there put it to the side and either dh or I will, with as minimal contact as possible, purchase it today.
One other note. I did try a spray root touch up product and found it tough to use as I couldn’t quite get how hard to press consistently. I also didn’t like the feel of it. I do like the Color Wow product which Angie (blogger) didn’t. So, I’m hoping we don’t just have different preferences overall with regard to hair color.
If you’re into this kind of thing, I’ve found lots of good tips on all things beauty and make up with Angie over the last few years.
I broke down and ordered the WOW root touch up. Only source for what I think is my best match is Ulta. Interestingly, even some retailer online sites are down. I was going to order some cream from BareMinerals and they have closed their online ordering for now. Got what I needed from Ulta.
^^I find that the WOW product needs to be reapplied each time you wash your hair. I’ve only used it for that week or so when my grays first start appearing and I get into the salon. So many other products seem better if you’re looking for really good and/or more lasting color. Still, WOW has worked well for what I’ve needed it for. Good luck!
I’m hoping I won’t need to use the WOW very much- I have curly hair and my part is not that defined, so it’s really just that very front part where I need to cover some grey.
I got my hair cut and coloured about a week before the shut down was announced in my area. Since now I’m barely leaving the house except to do groceries and I’m exercising frequently, I can’t be bothered with a basic beauty routine. Days I wash my hair I’ve given up using any product. I do a very basic blowdry then I just put it up in a ponytail. I’m not putting on any makeup. Most days I’m not even bothering to wear a bra (unless exercising), and just opt for a cami or tank top instead. There’s not a huge difference between my day wear and my pj’s either.
@CountingDown -I had to have a ear re-pierced and I went to a tatoo place. The young man told me they do them regularly. It has been great to wear earrings again!
@CountingDown - I’m sorry you are having the earring issue, but glad you mentioned it. I haven’t worn earrings in awhile (just finished week 3 of WFH) so I put in a pair of small hoops for awhile today.
So I’m a soon to be 63 y.o. woman. Today my boss ( 42 y.o man) asks if we want to do our weekly staff meetings with video instead of just on the phone. Um, no! Clearly covering roots and wearing makeup are not on his mind- they are on mine.
I dye my own hair, and have a huge supply on hand I purchased with coupons, so I’m set. But my hair is short, and needs to be trimmed every 6-8 weeks in order to style it. I was at the 8 week mark just as we were ordered to shelter in place. It’s already annoying me. I guess I’ll let it grow and then put it in a ponytail. Husband is planning on doing the same.
My gel nails came off a week ago. They usually last 4 weeks, but this time, with all the hand washing, they only lasted three. I’m going to really miss pedicures.
I am pretty low maintenance, but my hair grows VERY fast and I hit the desperate need for a cut stage when the closings happened. We have a pair of professional scissors because my husband used to cut our son’s hair when he was little (he screamed at the barber shop). I have stick straight, shoulder length hair and I know it isn’t that hard to cut. So, I found a YouTube video, set it up on the iPad and handed him the scissors. He may need therapy after the terror of cutting his wife’s hair, but he did a decent job. We are still married.
I am a runner and one thing I do need are pedicures. He told me to not even think about it.
An unfortunate byproduct of this crisis, adding insult to injury, is the constant zoom meetings i am in, meaning I can see my face among the Brady Bunch tiles on the screen, reminding me that I really should have given Botox a go when I had the chance. But no one has looked at me in horror over the haircut yet.
I used WOW in the past and liked it. I used to dye my own hair for 35 years and agree with the petroleum, lotion, etc. around the edges to keep the dye off your skin.
I started to grow out my grey two plus years ago and have been so happy with that decision. I thought I would never give up my dark brown hair, but after a job ended I gave grey a go.
If you want to live on the edge, you could go grey my way- I pulled all the color out, bleached all my hair, then toned it and was a blonde for a year as the grey grew out. LOL!
I had to run into CVS yesterday to pick up a prescription. While I was there, I saw a box of Sally Hanson wax strips and thought I’d give them a try. They definitely work, but I pulled off all of the stray eyebrow along with at least the top two layers of my skin. I will go back to tweezing.
Add this to my list of “things better left to the professionals”.
