Women's Studies International

I really want to major in women’s/gender/sexuality studies, and I also want to go somewhere outside the US. I looked into going to the UK, Australia, or Canada, but I’m having trouble finding anything. Anyone know of any good programs?

I’ll give you my UK perspective. Try posting in the International Students or Study Abroad Forums for more feedback.

Firstly, the UK doesn’t do financial aid for international students. They don’t really do it for their own students either. So you need to be able to afford around £14,000 or $20,00 tuition a year and at around £10,000- $16,000 living expenses.

Secondly, unis in the UK don’t do ‘majors’. It’s usual to study just one subject for 3 years or 2 subjects (called joint honours) half and half for the 3 years. This is in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland has a broader system but degrees are 4 years long to compensate. No gen ed classes anywhere. You’re expected to have learned to spell and count at school.

As for your subjects, these tend to be studied at the post grad (grad school) level as a specialisation although you can be admitted with a pretty wide range of undergrad subjects. It would be an elective if you were taking a sociology, anthropology, politics, perhaps literature degree- but every uni has its own quirks so you do need to look into each offering carefully. Grad school offerings number 34 for women’s studies, 128 for gender and about 130 for sexuality but these include masters where the above is just a component.

Looking on UCAS (the UK uni common admissions system) has a search facility for courses.

I found the following:

Sociology and Anthropology with Gender Studies
University of Hull- solid uni but Hull/Hell is out on a limb on the North Sea. Love it or loathe it.

Literature with Gender
Swansea Uni- okay uni. In Wales so culturally different from England. Chance to study Welsh in your free time.

Sociology with specialisation in Gender Studies
University of Warwick- top uni- great reputation here

If you can afford it, I’d highly recommend study here- especially at Warwick if you can get in.

Otherwise, you might want to consider doing a semester or year abroad at the above unis which would be so much cheaper. Or come here for grad school.

Cool choice of major though. I’d do a masters in it if I could afford it :)
