I watched the Canada/China match yesterday. Canada didn’t play particularly well but Christine Sinclair won it for them, 1-0, on a penalty. The Netherlands/New Zealand match also finished at 1-0.
Both of today’s were blowouts, and not particularly entertaining.
Unfortunately, I’m going to be out tomorrow night when the U.S. plays Australia.
I watched Canada yesterday and checked in today but checked back out. I didn’t want to waste a sunny Sunday watching a 5-0 blow out. Of course I would happily watch one tomorrow if it went our way
hoping that the W&M alum behind the bench will lead the U.S. to their first win since 99!
the mismatches are not ideal… the talent drops off very quickly in the women’s game. Does happen sometimes on the men’s side too though… I remember North Korea and Saudi Arabia getting destroyed in recent world cups.
I was out so didn’t see the game but from what I read this morning, it sounds like they had the same difficulties in their first game as Canada did. Here’s hoping that both teams get going in the next one.
^^^Agree- they are playing just well enough to get by. We have it on pretty much whenever a game is televised as my son and husband are soccer addicts. Too bad more people aren’t watching but pretty typical for this sport and for the women.
I feel like they looked better yesterday then the previous game. But definitely need to step it up. I left with about 15 minutes to go in the second half to play tennis, I checked the score on a changeover and was surprised at how hard it was to find the score on my iPhone.
agree with author. At a minimum 2-0 if the refs allowed the goal that was actually onside. They talk about Abby Wambach not having the stamina anymore to keep up, but who scores the goal…
I think that a lot of people here in Canada are watching, judging from what I see around Toronto. The various country flags on cars are in evidence just as they are for the men’s World Cup. Every game is on tv here and I watch whenever I’m able. We are big soccer fans, all of our girls played, with three playing competitively for many years. A teammate of one of my Ds is on Canada’s team but hasn’t played so far due to an injury. The team is definitely missing her talents. That D is going to two games in Ottawa today!
The hand ball in the penalty area is a decision call for the ref. Most people would agree that there was sufficient contact and desire by the Nigerian to warrant a penalty. I think it should have been called. On the other hand, the offside on the disallowed goal was … correct. That was a good decision by the ref who did reasonably well. On the red card, she might have left the advantage to Leroux and still come back with the red card after letting the play develop.
Speaking of leveling talent, the US is no longer as deep as it used to be. When you have to play a forward like Leroux, you know that the generations of Mia will not come back anytime soon. Look at the age of the players who played yesterday! Rampone was born on Jun 24, 1975 … she will turn 40 during this WC!
The USA is able to play a methodical --and overly static-- game but has few changes of rhythm and flashes of genius. They scored on a corner kick and do not seem to create much of anything against a determined but clumsy opponent.
I happened to see the goal while enjoying a pre high school graduation dinner. I felt glad to see the most exciting action in 2 games purely by chance.
U.S. needs to get their act together quickly on the offensive end… we look mediocre at best. Wambach is clearly feeling her age, and has admitted she doesn’t go all out for headers on the turf.
Alex Morgan needs to be fit, as she is apparently the only one with the ability to create off the dribble.
yes the goal line technology is very good, and perhaps most importantly, it is real time and does not impact the flow of the game at all, unlike the other sports getting stuck with instant replay.
I was out last night and didn’t see the game. There seems to be some controversy over the yellow cards this morning. Anyone who watched care to comment?
