Women's World Cup Soccer

Man, this game is chippy.

When we evaluated the video review, we should ask, Does it make the game more fun to watch? Does it make the game fairer? It seems to me the answer is No for both questions.

If I saw VAR overturn an obviously unfair call on the pitch, then maybe I’d be convinced, but so far the reviews I’ve seen have overturned a call that was in the gray area. And it’s still in the gray area, and there’s no particular reason for me to believe overturning the call was fairer than not overturning it.

The England goal was clearly onside, and the correct decision was made to overturn the call on the field and award it.

I think the problem is that now the officials are getting sloppy because they know the VAR will bail them out.

I like chippy! I thought the call on the call which was reversed was a good call. But you definitely need VAR to see it.

I’m rooting for Brazil. 1-1 now. Skill level has been relatively high in the game.

I like chippy in that it’s a physical game, but I don’t like how choppy this game feels. No rhythm. Still, it’s fun because the teams are evenly matched and skilled.

The French jerseys look like scrubs. Are those elite players, or nurses at a children’s hospital?

The only nice thing I can say about VAR at this point is that it makes the NFL standard of “conclusive evidence” to overrule the call on the field look good. Should be 2-1 France at this point.

When I got my first look, I said “How cute. Polka dots (or whatever).”

I get this feeling that France will win this.

@“Youdon’tsay” Regarding the choppiness, I’m kinda thinking that this is your typical match against a Brazilian team.

The one thing that I really like about these long OT games is that the match turns into a stamina or endurance test. For me, those last 30 minutes (or last 10-15 in standard time match) should determine the winner. Who is the best conditioned team? But for important matches only though.

I’m good with that outcome. Can’t wait for tomorrow!

I was rooting for Brazil but France deserved their victory.

The players are also hoping for more recognition. Some professionals are paid €300-700 a month and the “lucky” ones €2,00-3,000. ?
There’s no Title IX in France. So, the women’s national team had to vacate national training facilities 2 days before the start of the World Cup, because the men were going to play an exhibition game.
A TV segment which drew ire included the line “I wish I were the ball to be between their legs”.
So, the players are hoping women’s soccer will be taken seriously if they win the world cup, that girls will be encouraged to play now on, that there’ll be decent salaries and facilities, more visibility.
This stake is kept low key, but it’s there.

Where’s the emoji for FACEPALM!

Sauerbraunn and Naeher, both should start running laps now. Take them out. Please.

Now I see why the commentary I read yesterday suggested replacing Rapinoe with Christen Press.

I don’t have the ability to replay, but I believe the US runs an offsides trap right about the 28’ mark. One of the Spanish players breaks it, but Naeher heads the ball away.

Their coach looks like a Spanish Beto.

OK, I’m not sure what happened with the US PK at 75’ ish, but Spain having 3 players around the ball at the spot and one of them playing with the ball while the PK call was being reviewed was awesome. They’re trying to mess with Morgan’s head and then I’m thinking someone, maybe the coach or Morgan or someone, changes the PK taker to Rapinoe. That’s a brilliant move to me. The GK is thinking Morgan will take it and then Rapinoe steps in and takes it.

7 minutes added time again to a US game. That’s the only 2 times that I can remember 7 minutes being added to any game. And twice to the US in the same tournament?

8 minutes added? I’m a conspiracy theorist from way back, but that’s crazy.

And putting Press into the match at 96’ is insulting, mainly to me.

Goalie mom here: I’m so glad Naeher’s mistake didn’t make the US lose.
