Women's World Cup Soccer

Is the extra time being increase because of the video reviews taking more time?

That’s probably true, but the US had two games with 7-minutes added and I think they were the only two games with that much time added so far in the tournament.

I was at the game and I wasn’t surprised at the stoppage time. It was very, very hot and not only were there a ton of breaks but at least at the match it felt like players took longer than usual to get up. Morgan didn’t look right for much of the game. She was gassed by the time she was subbed out. Rapinoe wasn’t looking great either by the end but totally redeemed herself with the PKs. I don’t blame them. We were dripping with sweat in the stands.

Speaking of Rapinoe, what was the commentary on the second PK foul? It looked soft to me. We were speculating that it might be reversed on review. I also liked the switch for Morgan to Rapinoe for the kick. In general Spain was very physical throughout the match and the ref was allowing for a rough game.

Naeher’s mistake was tough to take. She looked shaky for the next couple of plays. In the end even though we saw goals on one mistake and two PKs I think the result was as it should have been. The better team won even if it wasn’t a great game for the US. Our defense is going to have to step things up against France on Friday. Onward to Paris!!!

7 minutes felt about right to me.

On the 2nd penalty, it looked like Spain caught the leg as she moved across the box

I was having connectivity issues, so I’ll have to watch and listen to the entire game later.

Naeher made a mental mistake. Sauerbrunn made a physcial mistake by giving up the ball so easily to the Spanish player. Sauerbrunn looked gassed too.

Lloyd, Press, Horan and even Pugh (and/or Davidson) should have been in the game earlier. I’ve never liked Ellis as a coach/manager or whatever. US has such a deep bench, use it.

BTW, Mewis looked spry at the end, she has gas left in the the tank.

The commentary was that the camera showed the Spanish player contacting the foot of the American, so the penalty should be good. But the commentators didn’t think it was an obvious foul. That is, they didn’t think it was a no-brainer, even on review.

The color commentator thought that Paredes should have gotten the yellow card earlier. She said said Parades kept fouling and fouling the American players.

If your name is Paredes, you should be a goalkeeper.

Jill Ellis said Rapinoe had decided to give the penalty shot to Morgan, but Ellis overruled her.

Yes, I heard that commentary after the game, but I’m wondering about the true intentions in someone’s head, maybe Rapinoe, maybe Ellis, switching at the last moment, because the Spanish players were trying to intimidate Morgan at the spot.

Could be wrong, but I got the impression Ellis thinks Rapinoe is their go-to penalty kicker and why tamper with success? That is, I got the impression Ellis would have changed to Rapinoe even if the Spaniards hadn’t done their antics.

Even the player (post game interview) said the decision for who takes the PK comes from the coach and they were all fine with it. Article imply that Morgan was getting hassled and it worked to have a fresh player step up and take the PK.

I loved how Mewis was fighting until the end. Impressive.

I don’t know whether it was gamesmanship in reaction to the Spaniards crowding her to switch from Morgan to Rapinoe, but it was brilliant. I was happy at first to think Morgan was taking the shot but but then worried that she had gotten so beat up all game that she might be too hyped to make the kick, that she wanted it too bad.

Man, the Canada games was disappointing. Just wasn’t as good as I had hoped this m matchup would be.

They keep showing commercials for the men, and I’m all, “who cares?”

  1. Apparently my family was on camera after the 2nd Rapinoe goal-in the background of her celebration. 4 people in the US warmup jersey. Now I’ve blown my cover!
  2. Having arrived that morning the girls and I went back to the hotel to sleep after the game. Swedish hubby went out in search of a place to watch the Sweden-Canada match and ended up in a random brewpub stuck at a table in the back. A few minutes later, through a nearby side door entered almost the entire American team with their families!

Next: Friday!

@Sue22 - fun!! DIdnt see, but nice to “know” someone famous

Sue, will you be at Friday’s game? I’ll tape it and look for you!

My DD was in Paris for the group games, and it turned out they were staying in the same hotel as the US team!

The players said they were not allowed to do selfies or any of that kind of stuff, which is too bad, so she didn’t get any pictures.

OK, one brush with greatness … I was working the Atlanta Olympics for the newspaper, and they put me up in a sorority house at Emory right down the street from the gymnastics team. I have pics with the Karolyis the night they won the gold.

You should take that as a positive sign. Advertisers apparently believe that there are men watching too, which is important if you want to increase the revenue generated by women’s soccer.

Cool, @“Youdon’tsay” ! My DH worked the swimming venue. We have autographed pics of synchronized swimming teams

LOL!
