Women's World Cup Soccer

@chercheur Thank you. Our family doesn’t have cable so we can’t access channels like FS1 or ESPN. It’s always so annoying to be unable to access those channels when a good game is occurring. Yet, we wouldn’t get it because we aren’t going to pay monthly fees just to watch a good game every once in a while.

@MoonKnight The next game is on Fox (not FS1) which is over the air. You shouldn’t have any trouble watching it! The schedule is posted here:

@chercheur Yeah, I saw from your other post. Sorry if I confused you with my post. I know it’s on Fox based on what you told me. I’m just talking about how I’m annoyed with channels like FS1 to show that I’m really glad they decided to air it on Fox.

I find it a little hard to get excited about the prospect of the US men besting a country with a population the size of California’s 33 largest city.

@Sue22 . I have no problem getting excited about it, but I’m excited by any soccer game.

In all seriousness, the US can’t look past this game and needs to play well to advance.

i watch soccer once in awhile, but really am a newbie. Can anyone explain the differences between the national teams and the pro teams? Do members of the US national teams need to be from the US?

@bgbg4us
Think of club soccer as the day job for the players and the best players play all of the world (e.g., Lionel Messi playing for Barcelona). These teams play a full regular season schedule. Most European teams play August-May while the US league plays April-October.

During the year, there are multiple “international breaks” when club play stops and players play for their national team.

The easiest rule of thumb is that national team players have to be citizens of the country they play for or have a parent/grandparent that was a citizen. So for example, Sydney Leroux of the US Women’s Team was born in Canada to Canadian mother and an American Dad and after playing youth soccer for Canada, switched to play for the US.

Does this help?

@bgbg4us I think it helps if I make a comparison to the NBA. The pro teams are the club teams that soccer players play in for a regular season just like how basketball players play for their teams such as the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers in a regular season. The national team is the team players play in to represent their country like when the US forms a team with their top basketball players to represent the country in the Olympics.

The men’s team looked pretty terrible tonight. Credit Curaçao, they have a lot of speed and some pretty good skill that gave the US fits all night.

https://resources.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/generic/02/78/29/07/fifastatutsweben_neutral.pdf pages 70-72 describe FIFA rules on players’ eligibility to play on national/territorial teams.

Christian Pulisic looked pretty darn good last night. FYI, Nick Lima the right back for the USMNT is a local player from Castro Valley, CA and plays for the San Jose Earthquakes and played in college for Cal.

@MoonKnight You can always stream the game at FoxSports.com

Thanks @sushiritto but I have Fox on my television.

No one played well last night for the US. Maybe Steffen. Not sure which game you were watching. Pulisic had the sure goal taken away from him in the 4th minute and had the assist but that pretty much was it. Everyone was losing possessions so much.

I give a lot of credit to Curaçao, they controlled most of the game. The US played like they were playing France or Brazil - letting the opposition control things. Curaçao was able to go from one flank to another with such ease, it’s a good thing they don’t have anyone world class who can finish.

Same one you did.

Quotes from a Bleacher Report article on the game:

CBS Sports gave Pulisic a grade of an A, which is “pretty darn good.” And the same grade as Steffen:

Lots of hubbub the past couple days, with Phil Neville, England’s manager, calling the US squad “arrogant.” And then accusing them of spying at their hotel.

I can’t tell if he’s trying to: a) be funny (that British dry sense of humor), b) firing up his team as underdogs or c) firing up the US squad. Probably all 3.

Tune at 3 PM EST.

Interesting lineup changes today/tonight.

Rapinoe out. Press in.
Mewis out. Horan in.

I’ll take the unpopular opinion and say I like it. Press has speed and a big foot. And a change in tactics that England probably didn’t plan for. Team officials say it’s not disciplinary.

Well, the coach is going to catch a boatload of heat if the strategy doesn’t pan out.

My son is in Lyon and just sent some pictures! He said the atmosphere is amazing! Their seats are great! Go USA!

What I’ve gleaned from the Internet, backs up my theory of not starting Pinoe, because of tactics.
