Hi, I am from Massachusetts and went out to see some california schools this past april but i didn’t get to see all of the ones i’m interested in now that im starting the college process. I would like to know some information on Loyola Marymount University, Santa Clara University, and Pepperdine University. Im not trying to get the “off the website” answers that are posted a lot, but more of a personal look into the university to figure out what it is really like there. Also, if you have any knowledge of schools very similar to these in California, because i have a sense that these school are all a bit like one another, I would love and appreciate your input. I think I have the academics to get into all of these schools, and I also want to play on the Men’s golf team for the school I go to. Thanks!

Santa Clara is fairly liberal, Pepperdine is super conservative, Loyola Marymount is in between.

If you like LMU, check out University of San Diego. It’s a bit more Catholic, but not exceedingly so. Attracts primarily wealthier A-/B+ students. Chapman is another possibility although it’s not exactly similar to SCU or Pepperdine. It does share some similarities with LMU and many students cross apply to the two schools.

also want to play on the Men’s golf team for the school I go to

Are you good enough to be recruited?

Of the 3, Santa Clara will be the most difficult to get into.

I know golfers at 2 of the 3 colleges on your list. These are all D1 schools (WCC) but not top tier for golf. You needed to have been talking to D1 coaches over the summer if you hoped to be recruited into these programs. University of San Diego is also WCC.

Chapman is D3 and recently joined SCIAC, which has some of the top D3 golfers in the country. If you’re interested in D3 golf, one good option is Claremont which is currently the top-ranked D3 golf team in the US. Academics there are excellent. Pomona is also in this conference but the golf team is not very strong. Other options are Redlands and Cal Lutheran.

Please don’t refer to CA as CALI. Nobody in California uses this term!

^^
Totally agree.

:)

As a Calif native, I smh every time I see “Cali”.

Occidentsl is now into golf as of two years ago

lol fauxmaven, very true.

Pepperdine is an odd mix. Politically very conservative (Ken Starr used to be the Dean of the Law School), theologically conservative (Church of Christ), but also very Malibu glitzy and many students who are drawn by that atmosphere. It has a good overseas study program.

I think of Loyola as pretty liberal. It is known as a good school.

Yes, agree on that Pepperdine description. I had a religious friend in high school who went there, but then sold Christmas trees to movie stars in Malibu over winter break to make money for school. :)

Loyola Marymount is quite racially diverse (USD, although also Catholic and somewhat diverse due to the amazing melting pot of So Cal, is far more “blonde and pretty/handsome”. LMU is also more centrally located than Pepperdine - airport is less than 5 minutes from LMU whereas Pepperdine is a long way up the Pacific Coast Highway. But Pepperdine’s ocean view is to die for. Pepperdine is far more conservative than LMU and probably a larger portion of Pepperdine’s students are wealthy. University of Redlands is another option, although less highly ranked. Depending on your scores, it might be a great merit aid option. Very diverse. Santa Clara is northern California. I haven’t been there but many of D’s classmates have visited/applied. Gorgeous campus feeling, diverse, not as conservative as Pepperdine.

Cali is a town in Colombia.

Redlands is considered to be better academically than Pepperdine, at least among the academics I know in SoCal. Neither is particularly known outside of California. Again, the difference is Division1 vs Division 3 if the OP is using this as a filter.

Would be helpful if the OP could give more information about interests and qualifications.

Yes, OP, can you please tell us which schools you DID visit in CA and what you thought of them?

There’s so much diversity here in terms of geography and people, some clarification as to what you are looking for would be helpful.

I know that Pepperdine is located in a GORGEOUS setting, and probably the best school academically on that list.
