Wondering what my chances are at Cornell..

I really want to get in to the engineering school at Cornell… but I’m so afraid I won’t get in. I was deferred early action from University of Virginia and I feel like this means I’m not a strong enough applicant for Cornell because UVA didn’t definitely want me.

My SAT score was a 1530 with an 800 in math. On the subject tests, I got a 770 in bio and 700 in math 2. I have taken 10 AP classes with three four’s and two five’s on exams so far. My GPA is a 3.93 unweighted and 4.38 weighted (though to be honest I’m not sure if that’s out of 4.5 or 5.0; I thought it was a 5.0, but then someone told me it was a 4.5). I have been volunteering with a particular group for several years and I have been instrumental in contributing to and shaping the focus of the organization, so I focused on that in my essays. I have a few art/music extracurriculars and I started my own business selling my art. I’m also the president of one my school’s clubs. The one thing is that I did feel like a did a better job on my engineering supplement for Cornell than UVA. I actually don’t really feel that strongly about wanting to go to UVA… really I’m just worried about what that means for my chances at Cornell.

P.S. I also got in to NC State as an out-of-state student…

You have a solid unweighted gpa and middle 50 sat score. You’re SAT IIs are pretty good too, but I think around 1/3 of the accepted students have perfect math 2 scores. If you have strong grades in Science/Math classes and good essays/recs , I’d say you have a solid chance. The whole volunteering part was a bit vague but I’m sure its good. GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks, WolfHaley, that is encouraging!

I’ve had mostly A’s and A-'s in math and science. As far as volunteering, I got involved with an animal rescue and started fostering cats about 5 years ago - I foster 35-40 cats a year now. I also got involved in redesigning and maintaining the rescue’s website, taking pictures and videos of all the pets, managing their social media, being at adoption events and educating people, and also designing fundraising newsletters each year. I also have been successful at finding creative ways to find homes for less adoptable pets, so in my essay I tried to focus on my creativity and how I want to apply my creative thinking as an engineer.

I know I should probably stop worrying about it because I’ve done everything I can, but it’s so hard!

Same i just wanna skip 2 months of my life and not nervous pee when i think about college.
