wood blind or silhouette?

I have two large window in my living room, 67"x76". I can’t decide if I should have wooden blind or silhouette for it.
I enjoy look outside and enjoy the sunshine. Silhouette seems the best choice but it’s quite expensive. All other rooms in my house have wood blind, they are good but these two windows are really big, I’m afraid about because the size, the blinds will be so heavy.
Just want to have some comments from you parents in CC.
Thanks.

arling, we bought wood blinds at [Blinds ? Window Treatments - Window Blinds & Horizontal Blinds](http://www.blindschalet.com/) and the quality, pricing and service was absolutely wonderful. Not sure if you will decide to go that route or not but just a suggestion.

My dad has huge windows at his house (think ceiling to floor, about 10-12ft high). He has black wood ones for them. Blocks the sun when you want to and lets it in when you want it.

I have Silhouettes in my bedroom which has 5 windows. I also love being able to open them during the day to let lots of light in. I also have pretty swags in the windows which dress them up. The other bedrooms in my house have wood blinds which I tend to leave down and just open the slats. In my living room I put in draperies which I think are beautiful. Again I open these all the way during the day to let light in.

The problem with silhouettes, IMPO, is fabric, any fabric will still absorb odors in a home, and believe it or not dust will create an odor.

As a realtor, every home that my buyers purchased which had silhouettes ripped them out day one and replaced with wood blinds.

Also, I am an anal from a visual aspect. I like all of my windows from the outside to look cohesive, so if I have blinds, I have them on all of the windows, and they are all the same color. Just me, and being anal.

My windows in my family room, are just as big as the dimensions you have given, maybe bigger since they are 84 in length, but I believe only 63 in width. The weight was not an issue at all because the mounts will be also in the middle and the ends to distribute the weight. I too do like icedragon’s Dad. I close them at night to keep the heat in, and open them in the morning to bring the light in. I reverse that in the summer, close during the day to keep the house cool, and open late in the afternoon to bring the light in.

JMPO, the only reason I would go with silhouette would depend on the amount of direct sun light in the room, because whether you have carpet or hardwoods, the sun will in the long run bleach the floor. Silhouettes would slow down the process.

I prefer silhouettes with with one word of caution. If you have a cat that hasn’t been de-clawed, they can tear the silhouette fabric. Ours tried to swat a bug once and put a nice rip in one. I like blinds also but only the kind with the larger louvers.

I have both. I have huge windows also. Several.
My den has wooden blinds. I wanted more privacy and wanted the wood in that room. They are very heavy and I usually only open as slats because of it. When wood is drawn up they are very thick at the top which blocks part of the window. Nice but heavy.
The window in the living room as a silhouette shade that has internal slats in it. Very expensive but worth it for that room. Love it in every respect. Huge window. It is light in weight and rolls totally up into a small header at the top. Clean lines.
In my family room, are 6 large windows which I left bare forever because of the expense.
They are now covered by Bali blinds (custom cut type) from Lowe’s. They also have a very small header footprint and are very light to draw up and down. Reasonably priced and easy to install. They do not have the internal slats (so they’re either open for view or closed) but have proved much easier I think and give a cleaner look overall than heavier wooden blinds.
While looking for blinds, Home Depot and Lowe’s carry different brands that can be custom cut and in varying sizes so it’s worth it to check around. I checked some of the different companies that do blinds but HD and Lowe’s proved the best price in the end and I knew what I was getting.

I have a Hunter Douglas silhouette in our dining room window that measures 70” x 70”. It is beautiful and I love it because it has the look of a Roman Shade when closed. During the day it blocks direct sunlight while still lets light in. I don’t know if I will buy it again for other windows because it is expensive.

I love the look of wood blinds, but aren’t they a chore to dust? My DH has dry skin and creates an awful lot of dust. I didn’t realize this before I bought a houseful of cherry furniture! I am considering either cellular or fabric shades. I have a neighbor whose front windows I admire from the street. Gotta ask him what they are. Agree it needs to look coordinated.

Thank you !!!
I will do wooden blinds (2"). I love the dark brown color which match my hardwood floor and furniture but I’m not sure if the dark color blind will makes the room “darker”?
Or should I buy white? all my other rooms have white.
