Wool Dryer Balls

Our dogs love them.

I’ve been using the wool dryer balls for about 6 months and unfortunately everything comes out very staticky. I have 9 of them, all pure wool. Started using them so that I could stop using the dryer sheets but honestly am frustrated with the static. Do you all do anything special to get rid of the static? Most of our clothes are cotton except H’s athletic wear.

Consider yourself lucky if you’re not bombarded by friends/relatives peddling Young Living or doTerra on facebook. :disappointed:

We have the dryer balls, about 6. Got them a couple years ago because I heard they were supposed to be a natural way of dealing with static cling. Given our long winters and the dryness that comes with it, we have plenty of static cling issues. I find they don’t work that well for static cling. Tempted to go back to dryer sheets but I’m trying to be a good environmental citizen.

I also find them noisy because they clunk around in the dryer. They also get wrapped up in the laundry so it’s kind of a nuisance to pull them out of the laundry pile or have them drop on the floor and chase them when pulling things out of the dryer.

As you can tell, I can’t give them a ringing endorsement.

I do still add a dryer sheet, because IME the wool dryer balls don’t help static cling either. But, I will take the shorter dry cycle and hope that offsets the use of an unscented dryer sheet (which I reuse for at least two cycles).

doschicos I could have written your above post! That is pretty much my experience. They tend to get caught in the sleeves of my H’s long sleeve t shirts and I’m always chasing them around the basement. I started using them hoping to get rid of the dryer sheets to be more environmentally friendly but have started using them again because of the static. I think they probably do help cut down on the drying time a bit so maybe that is enough of a reason to keep using them along with a dryer sheet for the static.
My H always asks if Wimbledon is being held in our basement when I have the dryer going

I love them. If you go to another great website Hip2Save, and search wool dryer balls the Amazon shop with the good prices should pop up. I need to buy more!

I’m in the negative review category too. I wanted to love them, but family said their clothes were staticky (and they didn’t know I had made a change, so they weren’t just complaining or being resistant to change). A tip I read on another board to combat this was to get more balls, and to reduce drying time, but I don’t really know how I would determine exact perfect drying time without checking the dryer every 5 min per load.

I am keeping them for down coats, comforters and towels, but was bummed that they did not work out for us.

@ilovebillyjoel, what makes you need to buy more? I thought they worked well initially but I don’t know that they do now. Although I think I’m down to 2 and maybe you really need 6 if they’re going to be effective? I do agree that they end up in sleeves, pop out and roll about when pulling clothes out of the dryer, etc. and I’ve recently been thinking I might just pitch the last two. But, if 2 is too few to work, maybe I’ll buy 6 more and give them another chance.

@collage1 , I read that if you are having a static problem, you need to add more balls. Haven’t tried though…I’ve given up for now. Too many complaints from family.

I first read about them at a consumer blog called Sunshine Guerilla, and bought mine from an Etsy shop linked there — some small place that was making them from their own sheep. Had 4, work really well and haven’t worn out in probably 2 years. after a mishap involving a dog and a house full of boys, I am down to 3.

I’m sensitive to additives, etc. so it’s a much better choice than dryer sheets for me.

I’ve got 6 and still have static. More than 6 seems like it would be a lot!
